Zen Dentist: Feng Shui for a Calming Dental Practice
Dental offices play a crucial role in promoting oral health, but they can also be a source of stress and anxiety for patients. Feng Shui principles can help dental practices create a positive and relaxing experience for patients. Imagine reducing patient anxiety in your dental practice!
My Start in Dentistry
At age 19, I actually worked as a dental hygienist as I studied to become a dentist. My boss decided to remodel his office, and as I watched the designers and contractors lay things out, I felt… something was off. It just didn’t feel right. You see, my mom and grandmother were Feng Shui masters and, evidently, something rubbed off on me.
The designers had planned for the dentist’s office to be right by the entrance to the lobby. This was a busy location where he would overhear everything happening in the waiting room and front office while he tried to take his breaks.
The next day, I convinced the dentist to change the layout by placing his private office in the “power position” at the back of the space, away from the hustle and bustle. Low and behold, I helped Feng Shui the entire practice, and it worked!
The office saw a steady flow of happy patients, insurance claims got paid on time, and everything just seemed to click. More importantly, my boss finally started to feel at ease and began to enjoy his work more. That was the moment I began seeing spaces in a completely new light. Soon enough, my boss’s friends called me for advice about their offices and homes.
Eventually, I put my dentistry career on hold to see where this Feng Shui path could take me. Decades later, here I am, a Feng Shui master. I now work with Fortune 500 clients like MGM Resorts, Lennar, Toll Brothers, KB Home, etc. on residential and commercial projects. I have also been named the Best Feng Shui Consultant. While I miss dentistry, Feng Shui is my calling.
So here are a few tips to improve your dentistry practice:
Front Entrance
One of the key principles of Feng Shui is the placement of the main entrance. The main entrance should be located in a prominent and visible location, making it easy for patients to find and enter the dental office. The entrance should also be well-lit and have a clean and inviting appearance. This creates a positive first impression and sets the tone for the rest of the visit.
Color Choices
Another important aspect of Feng Shui for dental offices is the use of colors. Different colors have different meanings and can evoke different emotions. For example, blue is associated with tranquility and calm, which is important for patients who are feeling stressed or anxious. On the other hand, yellow is associated with warmth and cheerfulness, which can be beneficial for creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere.
Practice Flow
In addition to colors, dental offices should also pay attention to the placement of equipment and machines. According to Feng Shui, you should arrange them in a way that is easy for patients and staff to navigate and use. To achieve this, create clear paths and visual cues that lead patients and staff to different areas of the office.
Keep Patients Separate
It’s tempting to adopt the open concept style of dental practice because it can create some efficiency and save some money in tenant improvements. Don’t skimp on this area – and not just for HIPAA compliance. You should have a separate room for each chair to give patients the feeling of security. This also firewalls them from the potential anxiety of other patients.
Private Office Locations
Be sure to keep private staff offices away from the entry or other high-traffic areas. Employees need time away from the patients and phone calls to recharge. As I mentioned with my dentist, you’ll want to put the private office of the practice owner in the power position at the back of the practice, preferably in the back-left Prosperity Corner.
Next Steps
Feng Shui is a powerful tool that can be used to create a positive and relaxing experience for dental patients. By applying Feng Shui principles, dental offices can promote a sense of well-being for patients and staff. This can lead to a positive impact on patients’ oral health and reduce anxiety. This leads to returning patients and higher profits for the business.
