Feng Shui Your Holiday Gathering
You may cringe when you think of the arguments that often arise during family gatherings like Christmas. But, know that such holiday events can actually be harmonious.
Here are my simple tips on adding Feng Shui to your home and table for balance and happiness this holiday season.
Power Positions
When family and friends visit you for several days over the holidays, remember not to give up your “power positions.” Your power positions include the master bedroom and any rooms in the back part of the house. By maintaining your power position, you can keep guests from overstaying their welcome or getting overly involved in your life.
You may have to deal with this creatively if your typical guest room is in the back of the house. In this situation, try to swap out the guest room for the home office. Or set up an inviting area that can be used as a temporary guest room toward the front of the home, making sure guests feel welcome.
Table Setting
When setting the table, don’t let guests sit at the head of the table, Rather, always the head of the household should sit there.
Pull out your fancy china since you are gathering with family and friends who are your most prized “possessions.” This is not the time to use paper plates.
Furniture and Decorations
When arranging furniture and decorations, make sure that no sharp corners (poison arrows) point where people sit. Round or oval tables are best to avoid bad energy.
Keep heavy decorative items below the level of people’s heads. Having them high up can create nervous energy and encourage heavy conversations. With all of the recent news, it would probably be best to avoid heavy conversations!
Put all these tips to use and watch your holiday become a lot more harmonious!

Feng Shui Secrets: Fixing Mistakes for Better Feng Shui in the Home
Your home should be your sanctuary. It is a place to escape the daily grind that life brings and relax while spending time with family in a positive space with positive energy. If this is not the case and the only thing you have to look forward to when getting home from work is more conflict, it’s time to make some changes.
Did you know it’s possible for Feng Shui challenges in your home to provoke and strengthen the negative energy of arguments. In fact, bad Feng Shui can attract conflict. By knowing the Feng Shui mistakes in your home, you have the power to find solutions to help calm and balance the energy. Read on to learn more about common Feng Shui mistakes and tips on how to fix them.
Energy Coming In
- Negative Outside Feng Shui: Before you even enter your home, the Feng Shui energy outside your home is important for many reasons. Think of this as the area where the energy which flows into your home comes from. You want it to be vibrant, healthy energy coming in, so it’s important to keep it clutter-free and looking nice. Keep the plants, trees, and grass trimmed and neat. If you’d like to learn more about outside Feng Shui check out our blog titled, The Importance of Home Maintenance in Feng Shui.
- Feng Shui Problems in the Entryway: A lot like the outside, the main entryway of your home determines the quality of energy that comes in. We’re going for bringing in vibrant, fun, healthy, and nourishing energy. The entryway is important for good Feng Shui. It should be neat, clean, and clutter-free. You know how the whole family’s shoes are piled near the door? This is the clutter we’re talking about. Need more tips about decluttering your space? Check out this blog, Declutter to Feng Shui Your Space!
Inside the Home
- Clearing the Negative Energy from Your Space: Avoid keeping the negative energy brought on by negative experiences, or a bad history in a home, by clearing the energy. This is a Feng Shui must, whether you do it before moving in, once a week, or once a month. The good news is there are so many ways to make this happen from clearing the clutter, to burning incense, to opening the windows. Every blog I write has something to teach about keeping the positive energy, but here are a couple to start: Five Tips to Invigorate Your Space Today and Fragrant Feng Shui.
- Give the Basement, Garage, and Attic Some Much Needed TLC: Speaking of clearing the clutter, check the basement, garage, and attic while you’re at it! Just because you don’t spend a lot of time in these areas doesn’t mean they can’t affect your Feng Shui. Read our blog, mentioned above, on decluttering and get to work. You’ll be amazed at what a huge difference it makes on your inner state of mind.
- Chaos in the Bedroom: This is a cause of sleepless nights for sure. Everything makes a difference: from bedroom decor, to electronics, to having plants in the room where you sleep. Everyone knows the price of sleepless nights on your energy, work, attitude, and many other things. Simply put, sleep is critical and having the tools to Feng Shui Your Sleep is just as important.
Common Mistakes in the Bagua Areas
In Feng Shui, the Bagua is a sort of energy map of your space. So, specific areas of your home are connected to specific areas of your life. If you’ve never looked at a Bagua map before, now’s a great time. You can read all about the Bagua on my website. The following is a list of some common mistakes in certain bagua areas of the home.
- A Stressed-Out Love Area: In the Feng Shui Bagua there is an area associated with the energy of love and relationships. Like all areas of your home, the love and relationship area needs to be treated well with the right colors, materials, and images. - An Unhealthy Health Area: Right at the center of the Bagua map, and touching every other area of the home, is the Health Area. The well-being of you and your family is connected to the state of energy in this area. The last thing you want here is the heavy, stagnant energy that clutter holds. Learn how to create vibrant energy in this space by reading our blog, Health: Live Life Without Sickness or read about the Health Area of the bagua.

Fragrant Feng Shui: Essential Oils to Elevate Your Home’s Energy
Smells evoke powerful memories. Remember going to Grandma’s house when you were younger? It had a very distinct smell that we don’t easily forget. This is because our sense of smell activates our brains faster than sounds, sights, or even feelings.
Plants and Essential Oils
It makes perfect sense then that Feng Shui principles can be used with essential oils to change the energy flow in any space. Feng Shui is all about bringing, creating, and having fresh, rejuvenating, and positive energy flow in your space. A couple of the most potent types of indoor energy to benefit from are plants and 100% pure essential oils, derived right from nature. No other natural elements have as much power as plants and the distilled essence of plant chi. Read on to learn more about using essential oils to help give your space a Feng Shui makeover.
Thousands of years ago, before modern medicine came in and invented synthetic representations of nature’s chemical compositions, almost every tradition used fragrance, herbs, and plant extracts in medicinal ways. Essential oils are received by the pituitary gland which governs cell generation and growth. These potent oils provide support for every system in our body. Their medicinal properties aid in good health and healing and help support every system in the human body! Wow, Mother Nature is powerful!
What Are Essential Oils?
Basically, essential oils can be thought of as the pure essence or life energy of a plant. The oils are extracted from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, rinds, resins, and herbs. Using pure essential oils in aromatherapy is a great way to help create a fresh positive space and energy flow.
While there are three main ways to get the oils into your system: topically, through ingestion, diffusion or inhalation, the easiest way to get them into your space, and reap the Feng Shui benefits, is to diffuse them. Wondering which oils reap the most benefits in Feng Shui? Here’s a list of nine of the most popular Feng Shui essential oils and their uses:
Popular Essential Oils
- Clary Sage: Clary sage has been used for thousands of years all over the world. It is useful for clearing negative energies. Due to this, you can use it during meditation to help the mind to focus.
- Eucalyptus: Use eucalyptus oil to relieve fever. It is an expectorant that, when diffused, clears the airways and allows for deep breathing. This oxygenates the system and keeps the head clear.
- Frankincense: This amazing oil is the most powerful essential oil for the spirit. Use this aromatic oil to ground and balance you. It can help relieve stress, clear your nasal passages, and reduce pain and inflammation.
- Jasmine: Traditionally used by the Chinese, this oil induces a feeling of confidence and optimism. Spray your space for a feeling of euphoria and well-being.
- Lavender: This is one of the most popular and commonly used oils. Treat the air with lavender to stabilize and calm you so you can release those negative thoughts. Lavender is an antidepressant, can help ward off anxiety and is a relaxant. With so many uses, this essential oil is a must-have.
- Neroli: This essential oil is a powerful tool to promote self-love, acceptance, and inspire creativity. Physically, this oil can reduce inflammation and pain, decrease blood pressure as well as cortisol levels, and is an anticonvulsant. If you seek mindfulness, clarity, and inner peace, Neroli’s your answer.
- Rosemary: This oil helps to combat mental fatigue while also stimulating the circulatory system.
- Sandalwood: Sandalwood is extremely cleansing and helps to lift the spirits while breaking up negative thoughts. It’s woody scent relaxes the muscles and helps to relax the inner noise and busy mind, giving you the ability to relax and focus. This oil also acts as an aphrodisiac.
- Tea Tree: Tea tree is known for it’s antibiotic and antiseptic properties. Adding this oil to oil blends can freshen, sanitize, and deodorize the air. Tea tree will help purify the space after illness and creates an uplifting atmosphere.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a holistic art and science where you use a plant’s essence found within essential oils to help restore harmony and balance. There are about 300 essential oils on Earth and these oils have literally thousands of uses. By using only 100% pure essential oils, you are ensuring that you have the highest vibrational chi needed for energy clearing. These oils are so potent and powerful that an environment will begin to change within minutes of their use.
Mother Nature is so amazingly powerful and so are the people who have tried, learned, and taught us how to benefit from all-natural essential oils. These oils have over a million uses, from providing support and healing for our bodies, to emotional and spiritual support, to an alternative to cleaning with toxic chemicals in the home. If you have a need, there’s probably an oil for it. It’s no surprise that the powerful, purifying, positive energy these oils hold can help the Feng Shui in any space. They are a must-have in our Feng Shui tool box.
In order to create good, healing energy through the use of essential oils, it is necessary to get the highest quality, 100% therapeutic, Grade A oils.

51 Feng Shui Experts Share Their Bedroom Decorating Secrets
October 13, 2017
Oftentimes you come home tired and stressed after a long day of work and you can barely wait to relax and stop all the hustle. Your home is a refuge where you spend precious time with your family.
More than the overall home, your bedroom is a place for intimacy and rest. If you are part of a couple, the way the bedroom looks and feels can influence your relationship. It can be the perfect environment for love and romanticism.
Even if you are single, the way your room looks impacts your state of mind and productivity.
The best solution for transforming your bedroom into a place of harmony that is pleasant to the eye and spirit is to follow the rules of feng shui. To do that, it would be ideal to hire a feng shui expert or even an interior designer. If you are on a budget and want to arrange your room alone, then we have a solution for you.

Diane Gallin – Wind and Water Feng Shui Consulting
In feng shui, our personal environment sets the stage for the quality of people we attract and reveals hidden messages that can either embrace or dismiss them. This is especially true in the bedroom:
- It is generally best to use pastel colors in rooms where you wish to nurture relationships.
- Shades of pale blue, green, cream and pink are yin, romantic and soothing – perfect for companionship, rest, and rejuvenation.
- The head of the bed should occupy the command position in the room against a solid wall with a view of the entrance door. This ‘mountain’ of protection assures a sense of security and a good night’s sleep.
- Symmetry is essential. Open space on both sides of the bed provides smooth access and furniture/lamps of equal dimension bring balance.
- The artwork is incredibly important. Uplifting, romantic scenes, pictures of nature and joyful pairings help bind relationships. Mandarin ducks (they mate for life) and peony flowers provide a strong metaphor for beauty and a happy marriage.
- Round shapes represent unity, romance, and accessibility in feng shui, so choose circular tables, bowls, mirrors and patterns to make a connection.
- Leave room for a partner. Many single people grow into their surroundings over time and literally lack space for another. Clear a section of your bedroom and closet for them to feel welcome.
Catherine Hilker
An ideal master bedroom will enhance intimacy as well as provide an environment for relaxation, rest, and rejuvenation. As such bedrooms are ideally yin in nature. Yin qualities are quiet, dark, soft, nurturing, introspective, receptive, etc.
If your budget only allows you to focus on one room of your home, make it the bedroom. Typically, a third of our lives are spent there. In addition, quality sleep is a key component to health and well-being.
Here are some tips to make your bedroom a place of nourishment, much like eating healthy food.
Do:
- Place your bed in the command position. This means it is against a solid wall with a view of the entrance and not directly in front of the entrance. Ideally, the solid wall is not shared with a bathroom.
- Sleep with a supportive, solid wood or fabric headboard.
- Purchase the most comfortable and high-end mattress that your budget will allow.
- Ideally, the mattress will not be made of materials that off-gas noxious odors.
- Use soothing, restful colors.
- Place an inspiring piece of art, photos or message directly across your bed to end and start each day.
- Close all doors.
Don’t:
- Have an abundance of yang elements in your space. This includes all electronics, bright lights, mirrors, exercise equipment, work items.
- Use your bedroom as a multi-purpose space.
- Hang heavy, ominous objects over the head of the bed.
- Sleep under a large, heavy chandelier or beams.
- Work in bed.
- Store clutter.
Finally and most important, take good stuff into dream time!
Marla Stone – Feng Shui Orange County
A noncluttered room is the start of great bedroom feng shui. Feng Shui is an ancient art and science or what you can call great flow and energy in your home.
The next important thing for good feng shui in your bedroom is a comfortable bed and mattress placed properly with two end tables.
This creates balance and peace and restful sleep. The placement of the head of the bed is important for good health. Western man does not do well with the top of head facing west.
So no matter what you do place the headboard on any wall except the one facing west!! Also, make sure your bed is not in a doorway to the room or that your feet face towards the door’s opening. The bedroom will be optimal when it looks like a beautiful hotel suite.
Consulting with a feng shui design expert is a great idea to create a bedroom sanctuary.
Anjie Cho
One important area to address in the bedroom is actually under the bed. It is best to leave this space clear, so as to allow qi to flow freely. However, if you must keep items below your bed, aim for soft, sleep-related things, like linens and pillows, and avoid items that may cause stress or distraction, like old love letters, sharp objects or even shoes, which can keep you walking in circles!
Another essential aspect of a bedroom with positive feng shui is the placement of your bed.
In feng shui, we use the commanding position, which governs the placement of the bed. It’s best to place your bed so that you can see the door while not being in line with the door. Metaphorically and energetically this means that you can see what’s coming towards you in life. If this arrangement isn’t possible for whatever reason, you can adjust by placing a mirror so that you can see the door while lying in bed.
Finally, take a look at the number of books in your bedroom! Keeping a lot of books in your sleeping space can lead to restless sleep, as books create active energy. If you are a before-bed reader, it’s fine to keep a few on your bedside table or nearby, but avoid keeping full shelves of various books in your room. If this isn’t possible, choose a beautiful piece of fabric or scarf, and cover the books before you get ready for bed each night.
Dmitri Kara – Fantastic Furniture Assembly
The Chinese say: Avoid/Block the dreadful “Death pose” at all times!
According to Chinese traditions, it is absolutely forbidden and you should avoid it at all times! The “death pose” stands for you positioning your bed in such a way that it faces the entrance/exit of the room. According to the ancient Chinese teachings, pointing your feet towards the door will surely cause both your life force and spirit to slowly decay till they run out for good.
Even so, if you’re out of options and there is no other way – do not despair! Contrary to the popular Feng Shui “no footboard” rule, there is a solution that can save your invaluable energy! If you can not relocate your bed, you can block your life forces of draining.
This is the one exception to the popular rule, where you could use a footboard, drawer or any other piece of furnishing that can serve as a blockade and thus ensures your well-being and sleep. As long as you leave enough room around the bed for in and yan to freely flow, you’re safe and sound!
Jennifer Bonetto – Real Feng Shui SOULutions
Here are my best 10 bedroom Feng Shui Tips:
1. Televisions can reflect objects just like a mirror, and should not be placed directly across from a couple’s bed. Keep mirrors and televisions out of the bedroom. It can cause couples to fight and argue over petty things. Your love life will also improve if you do not have a television in your bedroom.
In addition, a television emits electromagnetic energy that is disturbing to our energy. The closer and bigger the television, the worse it is. This can cause restlessness and insomnia. Computers also have the same affect on our energy fields and are best left out of the bedroom. The bedroom is for sleep and intimacy only!
2. Beams that are located over the bed and run vertically can cause couples that are sleeping together to split. They are bad for health as this is sha/killing energy, but when they ‘divide’ the bed in half, then they can divide the couple. The lower the ceiling and the closer they are, the more serious they are. A canopy bed, sheetrocking the beam or covering it up with billowing fabric, is beneficial.
3. Water features should not be in the master bedroom. It is disruptive to your energy and can indicate affairs. Water is primarily used to enhance wealth in a home, but when water is improperly placed it will ignite sex scandals, affairs, incest, alcoholism, drug abuse and other undesirable results. Aquariums, wall fountains, desk fountains, or waterfalls in the bedroom are not beneficial and should be avoided.
If you’re newly married, it’s best to purchase a new mattress. Who wants to be sleeping in the same bed with the energy of past lovers?
It’s not a good start.
5. Also, the furniture in the master bedroom should be proportional to the size of the room, and the room should be free of excess clutter.
6. Make sure that you’re not sleeping on the same wall that shares a bathroom, kitchen, fireplace or heavy electronics. It can cause health issues.
7. Make sure to have a solid headboard. You never want to sleep with your head against a wall. There could be wiring, plumbing, etc. A solid wood or fabric headboard is the best. It’s helpful for your career, relationship and life support.
8. Avoid any pictures of family members or spiritual deities in the master bedroom. How awkward would it be if you were being intimate with your partner and you look up and there’s a picture of grandma and grandpa? Not so much. Keep family pictures and spiritual deities in the main living areas.
9. The master bedroom should have the right balance of light during the day and enough window treatments to create a peaceful sleep environment at night. Blackout shades or something similar is best for night time. During the day, good lighting and ventilation are best.
10. Office furniture and exercise equipment should also be kept out of the master bedroom. You’re trying to set the tone for a loving and peaceful environment.
Shelley Nordlund – Transformations for Interiors
The bedroom is a very important room in feng shui.
It is a yin room because it is the place of rest and regeneration, as well as intimacy.
It should be one of the first rooms to be decorated because of its auspicious nature. Three basic principles include:
- Place your bed in the command position within the bedroom. (Command position means that when laying in bed, you can see the door, but are not aligned with the door.)
- Make certain that your bed frame isn’t made of metal.
- Put nothing under the bed. If you absolutely must because you need the storage, it should be blankets, bedding or bedclothes rather than hard items.
Jennifer Fisher
Feng Shui translates to “wind and water” and is the Chinese art of peaceful and harmonious placement to support health and happiness. Here are my tips for creating a calming bedroom space.
Remove TV, electronics, office work, and clutter – Eliminate all of these distracting hazards to create a zen zone.
- Create a well-balanced bed – Allow access from both sides so you don’t feel crammed, make a symmetrical bed with uniform choices of pillows on both sides, position your bed far from the door but with full view of the space and entrance.
- Choose a solid headboard – A solid headboard adds symbolic support behind your head. However, eliminate a footboard which blocks forward progress.
- Think light and bright – Use fresh whites and light colors to create a relaxing hotel and spa feel.
- Build layers of light – Utilize overhead, ambient, and tableside light with accent candles. It gives you the ability to tone down the lighting before bed, and light dimmers set the mood for sleep.
I hope these tips help you create a relaxing and rejuvenating bedroom retreat.
Feng Shui by Arianne Egli
In Feng Shui, it’s all about the Yin & Yang qualities in your home.
The energy in the bedroom needs to be more Yin than Yang. It should be a calm place with no strong stimulus.
My advice for wellbeing in your bedroom:
- for a good feeling keep only things in the room you truly like (no administration etc.). Also, remember your bedroom is no storage room.
- you sleep best when the top of the bed is placed against a solid wall and you are able to see the door and the window
- choose soft colors and soft materials
- no mirrors pointing to the bed (disturbing energy)
- get fresh energy in every day by opening the windows to ventilate the room
If you are single and looking for a partner, make the room attractive and welcoming for the person-to-be as well. Sometimes he or she pops up unexpectedly and then you have to be prepared.
Ana Cummings – ANA Interiors
Our bedrooms are the most sacred spaces in our homes. They need to be able to rejuvenate us every night, give us a sense of serenity and promote feelings of joy and love.
The best way to revitalize our bodies is to start with the most comfortable mattress on a sturdy bed frame
The mattress should be dressed in naturally breathable bedding. We perform at our best when we rest and sleep as deeply as possible. Having room darkening window coverings and closing doors allow us to completely decompress without distraction.
A clean and tidy bedroom with good airflow also lends to the health of the people who sleep there. Neutral colors or colors that you choose to wear often, will look best in your bedroom too. Having a room in a relaxing color palette will aid in the peacefulness of the space. A sense of calm will come over anyone who walks into a serenely styled bedroom.
Healthy relationships thrive in bedrooms with good Feng Shui. There are no iPhones or iPads next to the bed, the artwork or photos in the room imbue pleasurable feelings, and the floor plan allows for good flow around the room. Being able to access both sides of the bed, having side tables and lamps also create a perfect balance. The foot of the bed should not face the doorway proper and there should never be a mirror placed opposite the entry because it bounces the chi (good energy) out of the room.
Angela Ang – Rising Dragon Feng Shui
Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest health epidemics of modern times. Ronald Reagon and Margaret Thatcher prided themselves on just 5 hours and both ended their days with Alzheimer, one of many illnesses connected to poor sleep.
If you are sleeping in a good Feng Shui room, you will receive the positive energy from it.
If you are sleeping in a negative force field, you will receive the negativity also.
There are many Feng Shui formulas for determining the best spot to sleep in: 64 Hexagrams, the 24 Mountains according to a person’s Chinese 5 elements astrology or Flying Stars methods. These are specific to either houses or people or both combined. To get the best spot so that you can receive the best Chi your bedroom can give you, you will need an experienced Feng Shui exert to calculate for you. However, there are things you can try yourself.
If you are getting lousy sleep and waking up tired, try moving your bed to a different wall in your bedroom. Try sleeping in a different room. If that still does not work then try sleeping on a different wall so that you get a different directional input from the different wall. Ie. If you are now headed East and you sleep badly, try heading West, or North, or South.
Each direction will carry its own energy field and it may or may not be compatible with yours.
Sleep with no lights on in the room, not even a little bit. Have a blackout curtain. No WIFI or mobile phones should be in the same room as you sleep. If you still do not get what you want or things get worse, then time to call in a Feng Shui Master.
Bonny Ford – Furnish My Way
Feng Shui is a great style to create balance and serenity within your room. In order to best follow Feng Shui methods, you’ll only need to do a few things.
1) Place your bed against a wall (not under a window) that is not in the direct path of the door. This promotes safety and security.
2) Don’t store anything under the bed. It promotes idleness because it doesn’t allow energy to flow freely.
3) Create a balance with similar nightstands and lamps on both sides of the bed. This promotes equality between you and your partner.
4) Have items from different elements like fire, water, and air in your space. Items you can add might be things like plants, string lights and lamps, metal nightstands, and wooden stools. Pick things you like and place them according to the chart from this blog post. You want to try to have something from each element to maintain a balance.
5) Remember you can always add your own flair to Feng Shui, so see what you like and make it work for you.
Kelly Davies
A good tip to feng shui your bedroom is to focus on the atmosphere of the room if you are unable to rethink your furniture arrangement.
You can start by removing all electrical devices from the space.
Whilst it is very tempting to check your emails on your phone or tablet and watch TV in bed, the energy produced exacerbates stress and can be damaging to your personal relationships.
Good air quality is also paramount, try and open windows when possible and burning essential oils can also help purify the air.
Karen Rauch Carter
Does Size Matter in the Bedroom? Yes! …And Location Does Too!
Did you know that the quality of your bed (and bedroom) can set you up for success or failure in many areas of your life? Over the couple of decades that I’ve been practicing feng shui, I’ve seen this one little furniture item do just that to both myself and my many clients.
I find spending a lot of time concentrating on the bed and bedroom extremely important because it’s where you spend about one-third of your life. If I can make your bed safe, nurturing, health enhancing, and passion building, my job is at least one-third complete. So, what can you do to help yourself? Choose the best bed, and then place it in the best possible position within the room from a feng shui (great energy patterns) and bau-biology (healthy-home patterns) perspective. So, with that said, here’s the low down on beds.
Bed Materials
Choose a wooden bed frame versus a metal or a waterbed because it won’t conduct electricity like the metal and water ones. Electrical fields can come from wiring in the wall behind the bed or in the floor, or from anything plugged in near the bed like a clock or a lamp, etc. That means if there’s something plugged in around your bed (or it is your actual bed that is plugged in!) you have the potential of sleeping in invisible fields that weaken human bodies. Electrical fields disrupt sleep and have been linked to health challenges like fibromyalgia, arthritis, etc.
If you do have a waterbed, unplug the heater unit when in bed. The same goes for heating blankets. Unplug it before you get in — don’t just turn it off. You might want a professional feng shui/baubiology consultant to come and investigate your sleep spaces. They might find something like the home’s circuit panel outside the room throwing e-fields into the room for example. If you do have a metal bed and want to keep it, test for the fields and mitigate them and you are good to go – at least from a health perspective.
Bed Size
If your bed is “too big” it may portend to intimacy challenges.
The traditional suggestion for marriage trouble is to get a smaller bed or bedroom.
This can be done by adding darker, warmer colors, thicker, softer textures and fabrics, lower lighting, and reducing expensive exterior views.
If you have a king-size bed, with the two box springs underneath one mattress, you may psychologically feel like “you are sleeping in two different beds” with your spouse or significant other. A feng shui “cure” for it is to place a red fitted sheet over the two box springs to hook them together as well as “stop the dividing energies.” (The color red stops energy according to the feng shui rulebook.)
Bed Style
Avoid bunk beds as users are forced into subservient positions by having to hunch over to get out of bed because of the low overhead. If you must have this type of bed, cover the slats of upper bed with fabric so the lower bunkmate sees the fabric instead of the wooden slats overhead. Choose a fabric that creates the illusion of headroom, like one with stars, clouds, or celestial scenes on it. Repeat for the ceiling above the upper bunk.
Regular twin beds are fine. Just try to not have one side against a wall if possible. Any cramped spaces above, below or at the side may lead to weakened energy or lack of growth on the closest body part.
Bed Location
Bed position is critical from a feng shui perspective. If a person continually sleeps in a weak position, situations like loss of respect, ill health, and a host of other unpleasant outcomes may arise. The best headboard position is up against a solid wall with no windows or doors along that wall. The people in bed have a clear view to the door, but are not in line with it.
A slightly weaker bed position is a strong headboard up against a solid wall, with perhaps, a window or windows along that headboard wall to the sides of the bed.
Weaker than that is a bed with its headboard up against the same wall as the bedroom door. This position makes you vulnerable to disrespect, bullying, etc. If you can’t change it, place a mirror on the other side of the room from the bed, so you can see a reflection of the door in it while you are lying in bed. What’s reflected in the mirror is energetically equal to the real thing in feng shui so now you have “the door in front of you.”
A window directly above the headboard is weaker than a door on the wall. You are definitely vulnerable and weakened by this position. Hang a crystal in the window to disperse the harsh energy heading your way, or place a line of red (tape, paint, whatever) across the window frame, moulding, or behind the curtain rod or valance with the intention of stopping the energy from crossing through the window and onto you.
Even weaker is to have a headboard-less bed with the head zone up against a window. A solid headboard placed at a forty-five degree angle in the corner of a room is fine as long as it has solid walls behind it in that corner. You can also fill in that triangular-shaped open space with something to make it feel more solid at the head for sure if you don’t have a headboard.
The least favorable position for a bed is if your feet are in line with, or facing the bedroom door while sleeping. In feng shui, it’s called the “death position.” Try choosing one of the other weak positions over this one if you can. If you can’t, then add a trunk, bench, or other piece of furniture at the foot of the bed for a bit more protection. Place red soft storage items in the trunk to give you that red “energy stopping line” between the bed and the door. If you have no room for furniture at the foot, simply apply red duct tape along the bottom of the bed (You can hide feng shui cures) with the intention of stopping the energy from crossing the bed. I’d also hang a crystal between the bed and door for extra measure in this position.
And finally, if your bed is in line with the bedroom door in any of the above positions, hang a round multi-faceted glass crystal somewhere between the bed and the door to disperse the fast energy that’s entering the room and heading your way.
Sweet Dreams!
Adam Watson – Decorelo
I truly do believe the Chinese tradition of Feng Shui in the bedroom does create a happier environment, better sleep and also be good for your love life in the bedroom. To spread the good vibes or Chi, you need the bed positioned as far away from the door as possible or diagonally from the door, do not position in line with the door or too much Chi will flow towards the bed.
It is also important to keep the doors closed so you get control back and have time for anything that may come through it.
You need a strong wood or upholstered headboard for support and also a new comfy mattress and the bed at a good height.
The better night sleep you get the healthier you will feel during the day. It is important that there is a gap under the bed to let the energy circulate around you while you have a good nights sleep.
Keeping the bedroom tidy and uncluttered should keep any negative vibes away also.
Katherine Betts – Twin Pickle
The bedroom is one of the most important rooms to practice Feng Shui.
Sleep is critical to our well-being, and the environment in which we sleep makes all the difference.
There are general Feng Shui best practices for bedrooms such as:
Natural, skin tone colors from beige through browns.
- The bed should be located away from the line of the door.
- A solid headboard, comfortable mattress, and raised bed without storage below.
- The bed should be accessed from both sides with two nightstands.
- Avoid sharp corners and mirrors reflecting the bed.
Having said this, Feng Shui will not dictate the same bedroom for everyone. You want to consider the position of your bedroom within the house and your own personal birth element. My birth element is metal, and I feel much more comfortable sleeping beneath bright white sheets than cream or beige. White and grey represent the metal element, and I find accents in these colors against a skin toned wall color very calming indeed.
When starting from scratch I would focus on a neutral, natural base palette and highlight with accents of color that align with your personal Feng Shui. This can be done with simple pieces like picture frames and decorative pillows. You may want to look up your birth element, or the Bagua for your home, or just go with what feels right and suits your temperament.
Kac Young – Feng Shui Specialists
The best way to create a new relationship, or strengthen the one you have, is to use proven Feng Shui principles in your bedroom. For attracting a relationship, think dual: two of everything. Make sure you have compatible night stands if you only have one now.
Be sure the pictures you hang in your bedroom are supportive of a happy relationship. (You don’t want to picture a fighting or adversarial couple.)
Check that you have two lamps or lighting fixtures and make sure you present a comfortable and inviting bed.
Get rid of any clutter you have stashed around or under the bed and use only a few throw pillows for accent.
Stuffed animals should be in a chest or another room and the wall colors should be calming, warm and inviting. Stay away from bold red, bright blue, or yellow. Stick with peaches, clay, dusty pink, or sage green. These flatter the human skin – all shades – and make for a restful environment.
Avoid putting anything in the bedroom that is highly electronic because it stirs the ch’i and makes it hard to sleep. Cover or curtain big mirrors for the same reason. Design your bedroom for rest or intimacy and keep it hotel-fresh.
Robbie Nevens – Lamp Twist
A bedroom is a private place where you spend a lot of time. It can be a multifunctional room where you sleep, read and rest. Following the Feng Shui rules, the bed should be placed with view on the door.
Colors are very important to create a positive energy in a bedroom. Big wall surfaces can be covered with curtains and soft colors such as white, pink, light green or soft blue tones.
Try to avoid putting any electronic devices in the bedroom, as this may interfere with the flow of Chi.
If however you still want to place some electronic devices, you can always remove them at night by placing them in a closet or hiding them behind a curtain.
As a last tip, cleanliness and order are very important. Make sure you keep your home surfaces clean so your room looks tidy. When you wake up in a messy or dirty room, this impedes your energy. In a clean, tidy room you will wake up nicely. Waking up well is a great start to a great day!
James Hepple – Staunton And Henry
The bedroom is your main place of rest, and how well you rest can have a ripple effect on the rest of our life in terms of health and happiness. So we feel this is one place it’s particularly important to get Feng Shui right.
Like all rooms in your home, feng shui for the bedroom calls for a specific approach suited to this space.
One of our top tips for getting Feng Shui right in your bedroom is the use of color. Of the five elements, Earth is most suited to a place of rest, so one thing we recommend is going for Earth colors, such as Beige, Light Yellow, and other earthy tones. Using these colors creates a calm harmonious environment that promotes rest.
Another key principle of Feng Shui is reducing clutter. We’re all guilty of getting home from a long day and throwing our clothes on the bed or floor. So design your bedroom in a way that makes it easy to manage your clothes so you avoid the mess created from clothes. Examples could be a well-organized wardrobe that’s easy to access covered basket for dirty clothes.
Our last tip relates to the Feng Shui principle of purity of air, which is particularly important for the bedroom as we spend so much time there. A common recommendation for this is a good air purifier, which is great – but we also like a good Himalayan Salt lamp which are said to emit negative ions which purify the air and are beneficial to health. Whether or not you believe in this – they certainly create a beautiful warm glow that looks very peaceful and restful in your bedroom.
Ben Soreff – House to Home Organizing
In terms of Feng Shui, we always recommend decluttering first since Feng Shui is about balance we want to be able to reach the bed from both sides. We also want the bedroom to have good energy and clutter makes that almost impossible.
Another thing we see a lot in our clients’ homes are TVs in the bedroom.
For good Feng Shui, the TV and other non-relaxing items should be removed including gym equipment.
Typically, people have a hard time sleeping in very large bedrooms so make sure the place where you sleep doesn’t look like an auditorium. Proper lighting is important and several degrees or different types of lighting are important.
Lastly, consult a Feng Shui color guide to create a positive sleep experience.
Robin Foster – Carpet Cleaning Experts Melbourne
Feng Shui principles could be applied to any home area, furniture and even on decoration items.
I have some personal experience with using rugs and carpets to achieve Feng Shui goals. As carpet is one of the preferred floor coverings for bedrooms here are two things on the topic that may be of help for your project:
– Carpets and rugs are great opportunity to bring Feng Shui into a home and fine tune the energy of the room they are placed in. The power of colors as a representation of the five Feng shui elements can be used to boost the energy needed:
- Red and yellow color scheme (fire) for passion, expansion, and transformation;
- Shades of blue (water) if focus on money flow is wanted;
- Browns, tans, beige and golden (earth) for security, safety, and support;
- Green(wood) to enhance creativity, motivation, and inspiration;
- Metallics, silvers, grays and some whites (metal) will help for channeling energy and stimulating focus as well as clear thinking.
– Another thing of importance is the area where the carpet or rug will be placed in the room. If you are trying to find the right rug for the entry, take into consideration the direction of the entrance and choose a shape for the carpeting piece that corresponds with the feng shui element of that direction.
All in all when it comes to carpets and rugs just follow the main Feng Shui principles, your common sense, and decoration taste, and there is no way for you to go wrong.
Frankie Jackson – Silver Leaf Feng Shui
Your bedroom is the most important room in your home and your mattress is a vital piece of furniture in Feng Shui.
Get this part right and you are well on your way to being Feng Shui compliant and having a healthy, successful life.
Make sure your bed is not in the path of your bedroom door and it is best if your headboard is on a solid wall (no windows or doors).
Headboards are extremely important for protection and it will give a commanding (strong) position. Headboards should be solid (no slates or open holes in the design of the headboard). It is best if it is made of wood instead of metal.
If you are currently in a relationship, your mattress should not be carried over from a previous relationship because any issues from that past relationship will carry over into your current relationship. It is also important for couples not have a king size bed. Yes, I know, you think you need the space especially if the pets sleep with you but all that space you are creating and all that stuff (pets) between you and your betrothed will do just that, it will put space between the two of you and eventually you will separate further and further from each other.
The last Feng Shui tip for bedrooms would be to examine your artwork and decor in your bedroom. If you have art where there is only a single lady in them then you are likely a single lady. If you have a bunch of photos of friends and family you may feel that you are constantly feeling judged. To remedy, photos in bedrooms should be of only the people that sleep in the bedroom. Items in pairs (2) are best for couples, so 2 candles instead of 1, 2 statues/figures instead of 1. Items in pairs mimic couples, singular items mimic a single person.
John Linden – Mirror Coop
Though there are many ways to make your bedroom more livable and comfortable, the best advice is to avoid all electronics.
TVs, computers — even a radio — may seem like a nice convenience, but they are really fool’s gold.
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of rest. The hustle of the world will never go away unless you are mindful about removing those things that cause distractions. I even encourage my clients to use an analog alarm clock — and to charge their cell phones outside of the room
RD Chin
As the feng shui master, I always recommend the following tips for the best Chi energy for your bedroom:
1. To enhance your relationship, it is always best to have matching end tables and matching lamps.
This arrangement assures that the relationship for the couple will be equal and balanced.
2. It is always best not to have any technology in the bedroom such as NO televisions, no cell phones nor iPads, etc. The intention is to create a sacred space so that the outside world does not affect the personal chi for the couple. It is very important for the couple to reconnect with each other, to relax and to rejuvenate their souls and to rekindle their love + appreciation for each other.
3. It would be great to place artwork on the walls that foster peace and to reduce stress. Inspirational art or photographs include beautiful scenes of landscapes or beach scenes, etc.
4. It would be nice to place an “altar” which has the 5 elements: fire, earth, wood, water, and metal. A candle = Fire; a rose quartz crystal = Earth; Fresh colorful flowers = Wood; a small water fountain = Water; a Tibetan bell = Metal
Ian McCormack – Carlen Glass
A look at the history of crystals will explain why they’re so highly regarded in feng shui circles.
In one of her volumes of Crystal Prescriptions, Judy Hall describes how crystals were used centuries ago for protection and healing purposes, while the Greek word krystallos that our word crystal comes from roughly translates to frozen light; with light being an important element of feng shui. Different types of crystals also bring with them different benefits; take Cirtine as an example, which promotes creativity.
We recommend mixing and matching crystals, in bowls or even as part of an altar, to help bring feng shui into your bedroom. If you’re having trouble sleeping, or even if you aren’t and you just want a deeper rest, then chunks of amethyst are supposed to radiate relaxing energy that can create a sense of sanctuary in the rooms they are placed in.
Whether you believe in the power of crystals or not and even if you don’t particularly care about feng shui, there is no denying that crystals can be a stylish and aesthetic addition to almost any room. For an on-the-go fix, you can even carry a crystal around on a necklace too. Although if they encourage sleeping, you might want to take it off when you get on the train!
Victor Cheung – Feng Shui Nexus
The easiest way to Feng Shui your bedroom is to add some ‘Yin’ (as opposed to ‘Yang’).
That’s because the bedroom’s purpose is for us to sleep and rest, and an environment that’s more Yin can help us do just that.
This can be done by adjusting colors, light intensities, and many others. But please do note, Feng Shui is MUCH more than just the bedroom!
Marlon Heimerl – Bellacor
Unplug, de-clutter and bring touches of nature into the mix for a bedroom that’s primed for Feng Shui.
Unplugging means ditching the TV and releasing your death grip on your phone. Not only will unplugging encourage you to read, meditate or simply let your mind wander before bed, it will reduce negative environmental electromagnetic stimuli.
De-cluttering isn’t just about picking up your dirty laundry. It actually involves the arrangement of your furniture, leaving open, approachable spaces to move about, and regularly opening your windows to cycle air and energy. You can de-clutter your bed by making it approachable from both sides and by not aligning it directly with a doorway’s bustling energy.
Also, create symmetry and balance with dual nightstands and lamps with warm, calming Kelvin and lumen output for the small, utilitarian-based electronics in your room. Touches of nature breathe life and symbiosis into the environment.
Not only does this promote good health, the greens of house plants can either compliment blue and green color palettes – desirable soothing colors for bedrooms – or can create contrast with tan or terracotta color schemes, also acceptable for Feng Shui color schemes in the bedroom.
Lenny Kharitonov – Emma Mason
Use light soothing colors such as earth tones
Dark colors such as black, red, or orange can cause sleep disturbances and since the bedroom should be a place of peace lighter warm colors such as light blue or light green are recommended. Pink would be a good color for a girl’s room.
Sleeping in a relaxed environment can enhance rest and improve performance.
Have tranquil artwork with positive scenes
Art featuring dramatic or dangerous scenes can cause nightmares while artwork with nature and happy/positive emotions can help to relax. Since sleeping well is important to the performance we want to create the optimal atmosphere in the bedroom.
If possible set up your bedroom in a room with a lot of natural light.
Natural light boosts your Vitamin D, leads to higher productivity, and makes your mood better. Lack of natural light can make you unhappy and potentially cause a bit of depression. There are many studies that show that people who live in sunny places are happier than those who live in places without a lot of sun. So if possible bring as much sun into your bedroom as possible.
Liat Tzoubari – Sevensmith
Quality Air: To feng shui your bedroom, it is important to get rid of stale, stuffy air and ensure that air free of contaminants is circulating in your room. Open the windows in your bedroom often or invest in a high-quality air purifier to ensure the air you’re breathing is quality fresh air.
Bed Placement: A feng shui bed is essential to your bedroom atmosphere and is easily attainable:
(1) Symmetry is key in feng shui, so lamps and bedside tables should be placed on each side of your bed as opposed to just one side;
(2) Three of the four sides of your bed should be clear of any obstacles and easily approachable as energy should be allowed to flow freely from and around your body.
(3) Wood headboards are good feng shui as wood is strong and supportive, a good material to have near your head;
Helen Keating – White Lotus Holistic Spaces
Arranging a bedroom according to traditional Chinese Feng Shui is based on energy and flow. The bed position is critical, with optimum placement being farthest from the door with good sightlines to the door, while not directly in front of it. A bed requires a solid headboard of wood or upholstery for support and protection.
Avoid metal, which is too yang. Bedrooms should be yin in nature to promote peaceful, restorative sleep.
Avoid placing the head in front of a window. If there’s no other choice, use a high headboard and heavy curtains to mitigate the yang energy from the window. Avoid pushing one side of a bed against a wall (the exception is cribs) or window.
Don’t sleep directly under a beam or place shelves or art above the bed, both for safety and to avoid downward pressing energy. The décor should be monochromatic, and soothing. Add plants that filter toxins from the air and emit oxygen at night. Art imagery should be peaceful and soothing.
There should be no mirrors, computers, exposed TVs, or gym equipment in bedrooms. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary from daily life that only supports and promotes rest and romance.
Rob Sweeney – Vision Rooflights
Getting the balance of light and dark can be difficult when it comes to the feng shui of a bedroom, but if that balance is achieved, it can bring with it amazing results.
You want exposure to maximum sunlight in the morning, and also the ability to black it all out when nightfall comes.
This is because sunlight provides serotonin boosts which anyone that’s ever marveled at a clear blue sky and that radiant yellow ball will appreciate, while total darkness is key to having a good sleep, which brings with it many other benefits. Windows then, and also roof lights, are integral to letting in light and are essential for any bedroom striving for great feng shui.
Light at night resulting in bad feng shui also explains why a television in the bedroom is so frowned upon. When the television is on at night, it can flood your bedroom with light and disturb the sense of calmness you want before you put your head down; especially if you have the news switched on. Even if the device is off, light can reflect off the screen and act as a mirror; and you’ll need to take the plug out to stop those annoying standby lights.
Chrissy Halton – Organise My House
Your bedroom needs to be a relaxing place – it’s a place of sleep so don’t have anything in the room that doesn’t help you do just that.
Take away any clutter, remove things from the top of the wardrobe, and minimise what you have on show.
Also don’t have any ‘extra’ tasks in the room such as your home office, a pile of laundry, craft projects unfinished. All these will subconsciously mean you can’t switch off fully.
If you consciously remove everything apart from relaxing items, then you will actually sleep better, rest more, and get more done!
Hamna Amjad – Alrug
Feng shui can help you create an atmosphere in your bedroom where you can relax. Feng shui your bedroom with the following 10 steps to improve the flow of positive energy.
1. The bedroom should be located at the back of your house away from the noisy areas.
2. The bedroom shouldn’t be too large as it makes you feel less in control of your surroundings. It shouldn’t be too small either to hinder the flow of positive energy.
3. Keep the room clutter free to enable the free movement of energy.
4. The furniture should be minimal and all your personal items should be well organized.
5. Keep your room airy and well-lit for a good feng shui.
6. The ideal location of bed would be diagonally across the door and not opposite the door, to have privacy for bed and also to avoid facing your feet towards the door which is considered inauspicious in feng shui.
7. Avoid placing big furniture items such as a huge bookshelf.
8. Keep all the distractions like TV, laptop, or exercise equipment out of your bedroom.
9. Decorate your bedroom with beautiful art pieces and the pictures with your loved ones.
10. Mirrors should be kept away from your bedroom as they invite worries and restlessness in your life.
The Furniture Barn Team
What we may see as a space to catch up on some sleep, is really a vast opportunity for harmonious energy creation. There are many ways to transform your bedroom to a welcoming haven of positive energy and every change you make brings you closer to ultimate balance.
The Bed
Starting with placement, beds should never be placed facing the doorway. Instead, a bed should be located where it can be easily approachable from both sides and should have a wooden headboard (promoting strength and stability). You should never place a bed under a ceiling beam which is representative of division and can cause health problems (if a beam is unavoidable, painting it white can negate energy).
Décor
When decorating your bedroom, the art you choose should represent what you want to happen in your life and bedroom colors should stay in the warm, rich, Earth tones pallet. A decorative piece that doubles as a relaxation beacon, an essential oil diffuser, can be filled with an array of therapeutic oil combinations.
Mirrors
Mirrors represent the water element, a healing energy. A mirror should never be placed above your bed or directly facing your bed. You want a mirror facing nature which will amplify both the beauty of nature and natural light (the most harmonious light source). If you have multiple mirrors in your space, be sure to not have them reflect off each other, which weakens their energy.
Single and Looking
If you are currently looking for love, your bedroom is the place to start.
Ensuring your bedroom is set up in a symmetrical way (two-night tables, entrance from the bed on both sides, two lamps) and leaving space in your closet and drawers can lead to romantic successes.
Sue Fishkin – Rooms About You
Part of my work is to help people access their best energy -Qi – from their homes and workspaces. So when asked for one of my best “Tips to Feng Shui someone’s bedroom?” I thought I’d give a simple answer despite how complex the bedroom actually is.
Put your bed in the Command Position. The Command Position places the bed across from the opening swing of the bedroom door.
This way you can see who is entering and feel a sense of comfort.
I went to a new client who complained she hadn’t had a good night’s sleep since moving in. Her head was literally next to the bedroom door. We pushed the bed across the room to the opposite wall with windows on either side and side tables underneath the windows. I asked her to try it out and she remarked that she immediately felt better.
It did the trick!
James Hewitt – SCS Cleaning Services
A very important element to bedroom feng shui is to not have a second-hand mattress.
While there is the obvious fact that used mattresses could have damaged springs, stained exteriors or any number of problems; in terms of feng shui, it is impossible to know what kind of energy it has gathered from previous owners. Considering you will spend a large amount of your time on the mattress, it is an area of the bedroom where no corners should be cut.
Roseline Deleu believes that to cleanse second-hand objects of any unwanted and leftover energies, you should leave them outside overnight during a full moon. Regardless of whether or not the mattress is second hand, some people believe that simply including metal springs is against the philosophy of feng shui; believing that they conduct electromagnetic fields which can be disruptive to you and the room.
For this reason, foam mattresses are highly recommended since the materials used will not conduct electricity (bad for chi) and they also promote airflow (good for chi). On the subject of air flow, it is also recommended that your bed is elevated with space below for air to freely pass over and around your bed and mattress.
Angela Lenhardt
Here are 3 tips that I feel are important for stimulating the chi in the bedroom environment.
1. Proper bed placement so that you can see the “whole” room, as well as the door. This feeling eases the subconscious mind and allows you to relax and get a restful nights sleep knowing you can “see” what’s going on in your sacred environment.
2. No water features. Running water has the tendency to put the fire out in the bedroom, and the point is to “heat it up” and create spice in your life! Mirrors are okay, but not highly recommended, but depending on where they’re placed, they can either spark a flame or put it out!
3. Keep everything in pairs, even numbers. For example 2, 4, 6. No one wants to be the ‘odd’ man out.
And one of the best ways to attract your life partner or soul mate is to always have 2 nightstands, and 2 lamps to keep the energy balanced alongside the bed. Also, a picture representing a “couples”…doves, birds, (anything that mates for life) and signifies LOVE!
Added bonus: If you feel that you’re not attracting a mate, placing a solid red sheet in-between the mattress and the box-spring, just maybe the trick and give you the “foundation” that you’re seeking!
Dean Signori – Homes Direct 365
Mirrors in your bedroom should be placed with extreme caution!
Many argue if this one is truly based on popular belief or not, but truth is, your bed should NOT reflect neither itself, neither you directly in a mirror. It’s considered bad luck, bad aura and of course – bad sleep.
What’s more, the reflection of your bed should be avoided at all cost according to popular feng shui guidance.
Having mirrors in your bedroom could hurt your relation, disturb your sleep and even unsettle your soul.
If you still want to have a good look at yourself early in the morning – hang your mirror in the corner or so it’s at the farest diagonal to your bed.
This way you can both keep the mirror and balance how energy flows in your bedroom. Another handy solution would be to cover-uncover it via a simple curtain. My best advice would be to avoid both TV’s and mirrors.
Lucinda Curran – Eco Health Solutions
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese system that utilizes the energy of a site energy. The perspective here combines with Building Biology (“modern feng shui” as it includes the more “gross” manmade energies) with more traditional Feng Shui.
To create a harmonious sleeping and healing space it is important to start with the manmade energies as these are far less subtle. Firstly, check what is on the other side of the wall to your bedhead – is it the meter, switchboard, hot water system, fridge or heated towel rail? If so, move your bed to another wall.
From here, ensure that you don’t have cables and appliances in or around your bed – these include smartphones, tablets, cordless phones, routers, lamps and so on. The EMF from these can severely impede the quality of your sleep.
Moving onto the subtler energies of feng shui, it is ideal to have a room clear of clutter and nothing under the bed – these can all help with calming the mind to create a more restful sleep.
Having fresh air in the room will support your body to do what it does at night – heal and replenish.
It is recommended to not have mirrors in the room, and if you do, to cover them before sleep so that you can sleep and dream peacefully.
Laura Cerrano – Feng Shui Manhattan
The amount of feng shui suggestions on how to create a harmonious bedroom environment is endless! You have several methods converging at once in the 21st century and more developing as we speak. I share this because the experience and interpretation of what is ‘right’ vs ‘wrong’ is subjective. The best way to know what tips suite your home and lifestyle is by simply experiencing them for yourself. I invite you to be open, receptive, and curious when reading the various approaches. Happy feng shui-ing!
1. The most common feng shui principle in the bedroom is to establish a commanding position. This allows the occupant to literally, energetically, and metaphorically see and feel who and what opportunities are approaching their life. An ideal layout would be to have a clear vantage point of the bedroom door from the bed, while not being 100% in alignment with the doorway.
2. Adopting the lifestyle of ‘less is more’ through decluttering has been at the forefront of modern day feng shui practices. Your bedroom is a space for rejuvenation and reconnection. Studies conducted by St. Lawrence University in 2015 suggest a correlation between excessive bedroom clutter and sleep disturbances, which could lead to depression and irritability.
3. Keeping major electronics out of your bedroom is strongly suggested; TVs, computers, and cell phones. They emit the largest amounts of electromagnetic energy fields which disrupt your immune system and circadian rhythm. Studies conducted by University of California, Berkley found: “Children who slept near small screens, such as phones or other portable electronics, reported sleeping about 21 fewer minutes per night than children who didn’t sleep near those types of devices.”
According to a Harvard University study, this interference is from “blue wavelengths—which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood—seem to be the most disruptive at night. And the proliferation of electronics with screens, as well as energy-efficient lighting, is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown.”
4. Adding an area rug under or near your bed is another way to help ground the energy when sleeping and create a balance between yin (soft textures) and yang (hard surfaces). Some clients may prefer a full, half, or use two smaller rugs on each side of their bed. When possible, choosing organic and natural fibered rugs is best so no off-gassing of chemicals is released into your home.
5. Try not to store items under your bed, if it could be avoided. From a feng shui perspective, storage under the bed can obstruct your sleeping pattern because the movement of energy cannot flow evenly around your bed’s energy field. For instance, shoes are suggested to be stored in closets because they symbolize other people potentially taking advantage of you. If you need to store items under the bed do to limited storage space, be mindful of who gave these items to you and what emotional content you associate with them. What could be the exception? A sample list could include; bedding, clothing, and towels. A small number of books is also acceptable, as long as their titles and content are positive
6. Making your bed may seem small and insignificant, yet a greater development within your conscious and subconscious minds is evolving. This simple act becomes your first accomplishment of the day and it only requires two minutes of your time. This also creates a mindset of being organized, which helps reduce stress and increase motivation. It’s also a means of self-respect because you’ve taken the time to prepare your bed for sleep which expresses and demonstrates self-love.
7. Opening your blinds and your windows (if weather permits) during the day is a wonderful habit to acquire. In feng shui, this is called letting the outside in. It helps to refresh the energy by allowing natural light and fresh air to filter into your bedroom. At night, close the windows and blinds as to keep the fresh energy circulating inside your bedroom when sleeping.
8. When in doubt consider using neutral colors when painting large wall surfaces as to not overstimulate the energy when sleeping.
This could include beiges, cream colors, warm or cool earth tones. To help add splashes of color, a typical feng shui suggestion is to use subtle accents of pinks, reds, and whites because they associate with the energy of partnership. If you choose to implement this suggestion into your room, do so in small doses. Such as with artwork, small crystals (like rose quartz), through the use of organic candles or in the colors of your bed sheets. If you are a gentleman or lady who wishes not to use pink, don’t. Instead, connect with a warm color that works for you and your space. Essentially, you are creating a sacred and sensual environment for yourself and to share with another—if that is your intention.
9. Take into the overall composition of your bedroom and establish balance and comfort starting with the overall furniture arrangement. This means, really take a mental inventory of future that is truly functional or that is just taking up space. Once that foundation has been established, refine the implementation of two’s and pairs as this symbolizes equal relationships. This could be achieved with two side tables (if space allows), two lamps, or even through artwork.
10. Referring back to artwork, become selective with what you choose to display inside your bedroom. A study published in the June issue of the journal ‘Brain and Cognition’ looked at the research that neuroscientists have done while scanning the brains of people looking at the artwork.
“Viewing paintings triggered responses in brain regions associated with visual understanding and object recognition, as might be expected, but viewing artwork also was connected to activity associated with emotions, inner thoughts, and learning. Other research tells us more about how art can change the way we see the world.” In other words, it’s best to choose artwork for the bedroom that associates to; tranquility, rest, reconnection, harmony, and peacefulness. If you are not sure where to begin, consider looking into images from nature. General examples include landscapes or close-ups of flowers.
11. Do your best as not to position your bed under ceiling beams, fans, or near protruding wall edges. This is also important to keep in mind when choosing bedroom furniture. Minimal sharp edges are most ideal. Think round, curved or beveled edges.
Why? These few references are indications of “Sha” energy; life draining chi’. Symptoms from a feng shui perspective could be recognized as feeling tired, unfocused, or easily emotionally triggered.
12. Are mirrors good or bad in the bedroom? There are varying thoughts on this, but the one perspective many consultants could agree upon is that adding too many mirrors in the bedroom creates an imbalance of energy. Mirrors are perceived to have the ability to activate the energy within a room. Clients I work with will sometimes choose to keep a mirror or two in their bedroom and report back that they sleep soundly. Others will negotiate the principle and remove extra mirrors and still keep one while being mindful of what it reflects. Some clients love the idea of no mirrors in the bedroom or may just place a long mirror inside the closet door. If you do that, just make sure the closet is organized because mirrors double what they reflect energetically and literally.

1. Decluttering helps create calmness. Take 10 minutes each day to sort through a pile, drawer, or shelf. Ask yourself—Do I need this? Do I use this regularly? If not, get rid of it. For the stuff you want or need to keep, make a home for it so it’s easy to put away. Stop after 10 minutes and do it again the next day.
2. Keep the bedroom a bedroom, and not an office. The minute you bring your laptop or tablet into your bedroom, you’re taking away the calmness that a bedroom is meant to hold. Working from your bed or reading from your iPad is known to cause sleep issues, as well as bring stress into a space that’s intended for peacefulness.
3. Bringing more “stuff” into your home causes more clutter, which then causes more stress for most people.
Sure, it’s fun to shop for things for your home, clothes, kitchen gadgets, and office and art supplies, but the more you buy, the more stuff you’re bringing into your home that needs a place. So before you buy another thing you think you need, stop yourself and remember the simple fact that it is actually creating more clutter, which creates more stress.
4. Make your bed every morning. It sounds simple enough, but the small act of making your bed makes coming home more inviting.
5. Decorate your home in earth tones. Natural colors in soft tones, such as white, grey, shades of beige, and pink beige have the power to induce a sense of relaxation and calmness. Also make sure to choose natural, light fabrics.
6. Add calmness with green plants placed around your home. Plants have a calming effect through their soothing green colors and by providing oxygen. Bonsai trees, peace lilies, English Ivy, rubber plants, or hanging terrariums make a good choice and are often included in zen décor.
7. Live with things that inspire and lift you up. It’s easy for us to become oblivious to our surroundings and not see the things that drain our energy. Start fixing the things like the broken ice maker and the too loose toilet handle. Change out your burned out light bulbs. Anything that can weigh on us tends to deplete our energy and wear on our confidence.
8. Create safety by positioning your bed as far away from the door as possible without losing sight of the entrance to the bedroom. Try placing the bed in the diagonal corner just opposite the door. Proper bed placement will increase sleep and relaxation. If your bedroom ceiling has beams, create a canopy over the bed to counteract the heaviness of the beams and neutralize negative energy in the room.
9. Keep energy balanced in the room by not placing the bed in front of a window. Energy comes and goes through the window and blocking it can cause a disruption in flow. Utilize a wood headboard to provide support and strength for your head and induce a restful sleep.
10. Ordinarily, using a footboard would be construed as blocking forward movement in life. However, if your feet point out to the door, use a footboard, trunk, or small couch at the end of the bed to avoid the ‘Death Position’ and prevent your life force from draining while you sleep.
11. Use bedside tables with soft flowing lines versus square pointed edges. Right angles created by square edges create ‘poison arrows’ that point negative energy toward the bed and can disrupt sleep by inviting a feeling of unease.

The position of the bed
This is the main part of the bedroom.
The bed should be positioned in a way that it is easily accessed from both sides.
*There should be two nightstands on each side of the bed, with the ideal case being the left one is a little bigger than the right one. This will emulate the natural flow of the energy around the body.
*It should have a large solid headboard to bring in security and stability. If the bed must be under a window, you can create the illusion of having a wall with dark and heavy curtains drawn. But there must be at least a little wall under the window.
*The bed should also not be in direct line with the door but you should be able to see the door from the bed.
Additional tips for the bed
*There shouldn’t be storage under the bed.
*Avoid having metal in the bedroom.
*Avoid sharp edges in the bedroom, especially on the nightstands.
Art and mirrors in the bedroom.
*The bedroom can have both of them with some guidelines.
*The mirror shouldn’t be large.
*The mirror shouldn’t be against the bed.
*If you can see the door from the bed, place the mirror in a way that you see the reflection of the door in it.
*There should be art facing the bed. A funny, positive, loving piece of art (flowers, sunrise, happy people) should be on the wall. It will be the first thing you see in the morning and it should be positive.
*If you want live flowers in your bedroom, opt for small ones.
The best colors for a feng shui bedroom:
*Choose a color that will bring balance to your life. If you want more passionate nights and happy energy in the morning – choose orange and red. If your job is too stressful and you need relaxation and good sleep – blue or lavender can give you that.

1. Make Room for Two! Your goal, if single, is to attract a partner, and if in a relationship, is to enhance the romance. With that in mind, look around your home and see if your space allows for another person to join you. Even if you’ve been in a relationship, your space can create an undercurrent of tension that hinders romance. Good Feng Shui can help.
2. Open Up Some Space. You have to create space for what / who you are trying to attract. You’d be surprised at what your space says about you and your intentions of being single or matched. If you are really trying to attract a significant other, make sure your space communicates this.
3. Don’t Decorate for One. If your bedroom is screaming “single” with only things for you, then you will keep attracting energy for you only. Do you have pictures and paintings of “single” things? Do you hang pictures of single items such as a single woman? Do you have a single lamp, single chair, single flower? It’s best to have pairs so that you show you are ready to share a life for two. Is your dining table big enough to share a meal with another person or with others such as a family? Create a space with “couple energy,” especially in the bedroom.
4. Share Your Bed. Make sure one side of the bed isn’t against the wall, as you want to make sure each person can get into the bed from both sides of the bed.
5. Balance Your Room. Have balance in the room. Do you have matching bedside tables? If they’re not the same size or same style, they will create an unbalanced energy in your love relationship. If one is bigger then the other, one of you will have more power over the other person in that relationship. If they’re not a matching style, maybe your partner and you have different views about your relationship. If you have one candle on a bedside table, add another candle beside it to show balance in the relationship. Show pairs whenever you can.
6. Give Them a Drawer. Also keep the drawer space clean for your future partner to store their belongings.
Even if you don’t have that special person in your life right now, you need to create space for someone.
It’s all about being ready and being open to the idea of having a loving partner.
7. Clean Out Your Closet. Now look in your closet. Is your closet filled with your clothes and shoes leaving no room for your partner to be able to hang their clothes? Clean out your closet and make it inviting so that when the time is right, he or she will feel the welcoming energy.

Many people think that feng shui is just some kind of scam, but the truth is quite different. In fact, feng shui is a set of rules, which help you arrange everything in your home in a way that will provide you a healthy life without any added stress.
Some of the most useful feng shui tips I use in my own bedroom include avoiding having the bed on the same wall as the door or the window.
Doors and windows are gateways to the outside world, which is filled with distractions that can disturb your sleep. The bed also has to be easily approachable from both sides, and there should be a bedside table on each side.
As for the colors, soothing and the so-called “skin colors” (from white to beige and even chocolate) are the best possible choice, which will provide you with a good sleep. Also, it’s not recommended to have hanging features over the bed, because they can cause a subconscious discomfort at night.

Eliminate clutter
In the context of feng shui, clutter represents something unfinished. It also slows down our personal growth and life achievements.
You need to eliminate any clutter present in the room to let Chi flow openly in your bedroom.
According to feng shui traditions, plants located in the corners of the room help the energy to flow freely, so make sure you include a couple of plants in your bedroom.
Wardrobe/closet organization
We sometimes put clutter behind closed doors and pretend that it is not there. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed when choosing your next outfit, then it is time to re-organize your closet. This will help you feel in control of the things around you. Remove barely touched clothes by selling or donating them, and to keep shoes and other accessories neat, place organizers and shelves for an easier access.
Bed configuration
According to the feng shui principles, your bed should be approachable from both sides, it should have two bedside tables and shouldn’t be placed in line with any door. Also, having bed sheets from natural fibers helps to keep the feng shui energy flowing.
Joseph Schaffarczyk – Pro-Fit Mouldings Ltd
The best feng shui bedroom has a warming, inviting feel that should soothe and calm. The first thing you need to do to achieve this sense of calm and serenity is to get rid of any distractions, like a television for instance.
They only bring the stress of the outside world into what should be a place for escape and relaxation. Also, pay attention to the air quality and flow in your bedroom.
Be sure to have a good air purifier and plants to counteract stale air that’s full of pollutants.
When it comes to the colors in your bedroom choose soothing and balanced colors. Whites and browns tend to work best in this situation. Choosing the right position for your bed is one of the most important factors in creating good feng shui in your bedroom.
You need a good headboard, high-quality sheets, and a solid mattress to begin with.
Place two bedside tables on each side. This is not only practical, it also promotes a harmonious look and feel to your bedroom. Last but not least is lighting. Candles are the best thing to have when you wish to create a warm, welcoming bedroom experience.
Lauren Haynes – Star Domestic Cleaners
Clean the windows
The windows in your home symbolize your eyes to the world. Clean windows can help you see things clearly, while dirty ones can limit your perspective. Just grab some old newspaper and a mixture of white vinegar and water and voila.
Remove the clutter
A messy bedroom can really disturb the Chi flow, so you have to make sure the room is properly decluttered.
In feng shui, the clutter symbolizes the unfinished business, so try to remove everything without a practical purpose or the items which don’t contribute to the overall look of the room. The items which haven’t been used for months have to be cleared out.
Remove the TV or just cover it up
The active energy of the TV can be really disruptive to your sleep and the overall mood of the bedroom. In case you don’t want to completely remove it out of the room, simply cover it up with a beautiful fabric when you don’t use it.
Tone down the lightning
The perfect bedroom should be dark enough to relax and bright enough to see the surroundings. Since the light is our number 1 nutrient and source of energy, consider installing dimmer switches or multilevel lightning. Candles are the best feng shui light source, so they will clear the energy and help you achieve a warm and relaxing atmosphere.

My best tips to Feng Shui a bedroom are the following. First and foremost make sure your bed is in its optimal position which in Feng Shui is called Command position. You should have a view of your door.
The bed should be placed diagonally from the bedroom door, never right in front of the door.
Secondly, make sure your headboard is supportive. Best headboards are the solid headboards whether it’s wood or upholstered. Make sure there’s nothing stored under the bed especially books, textbooks, paperwork. If you do need to use the storage under the bed, then linens, towels or similar items are best stored there instead.
Be mindful of the artwork in the bedroom, make sure it’s happy and peaceful. Make sure the bed is balanced with nightstands on each side of the bed. If possible, don’t keep work-related items in your bedroom and limit electronics such as tv, phone, laptop. TV’s especially are not recommended as bedrooms should be yin in nature.
For a good night’s sleep, make sure your wall paint is not too bright and/or wallpaper too busy. Soothing colors are best for a good night’s sleep. Another thing to be mindful of is the lighting. Make sure there are different types of lighting to allow you to chose ambient light when needed. A dimmer switch can create a similar effect as well.
Lisa Janusz – Inspire Chi
My most important piece of Feng Shui advice for the bedroom is to make it a room that you love. When you walk in you should feel immediately relaxed. We’re all about intention and making a space reflect what you want in life.
If you want to find a relationship or enhance one, make sure the room speaks to that. Ask yourself: is it romantic? Does it have pairs of items, like nightstands? The bedroom should be all about rest and rejuvenation. Only two things should be happening there; sleep and intimacy.
Remove anything that’s not related to those (computers, exercise equipment, photos of other people, mementos from past relationships, etc.).
Your bedroom should be all about you and your partner, so be aware of what is – or is not – in that room.
Anthony Ashworth
Most of us spend more time in our bedroom than any other room in our house. In fact, around 30 percent of our life is spent in our bedroom. The primary use of this room is sleep.
Yes, it is also a place for love and relationship, but that is a secondary function of the master bedroom.
Our sleep returns us to deep quiet. It is a time to return to ourselves, our subconscious, our very soul, a time to reunite with the vast self from whence we and everyone originally came forth.
We are very sensitive to the effects of energy when we sleep. We may be closed off from cognitive thinking, seeing, etc., but we are energetically very open. This compounded by the fact that we spend almost a third of our life in bed asleep makes this room especially important.
The following are the aspects we should consider when feng shui our bedroom for ultimate relaxation and rest:
WHAT WE SEE FIRST
Have and make sure you can see some positive imagery when entering the room. What you see upon entering your bedroom is something that gives you the feeling of peace and serenity. This could be a photograph, a favorite inspirational life quote, a painting, or a sculpture; even flowers will enhance these positive, life-supporting feelings.
CLEAR OF CLUTTER
Lack of clutter gives clarity, room for the new, and restfulness to your subconscious. Clear away extra items, especially under the bed. Lack of clutter allows non-attachment to things; clutter shows a fear of future lack in your life, or lack in the past (even past life).
Own your own stuff, or your stuff owns you!
Use the three pile method to decide what you should keep or get rid of. Hold or touch the item, and feel and access what it means to you! Ask yourself, is it useful and/or is it loved? Does it send your energy up or down? Then make three piles as follows:
Pile 1: Items that should definitely go
Pile 2: Items that you are not sure about
Pile 3: Items that are useful and loved and you want to keep. If you must have “stuff,” keep it tidy and organised.
SHARP CORNERS
Try NOT to sleep in direct alignment with sharp corners, known in Chinese feng shui as poison arrows. They create cutting energy. This includes overhead beams.
COLOR
Color does affect us!
Try to use restful, still, soft, warm, and nurturing earthy colors and skin tones! Do not use blue, as this brings in the element of air, which is about movement. Be careful with bright colors, especially fiery hot bright colors (even for children’s rooms). The much used and poorly advised primary colors for children’s bedrooms is really not very suitable at all. Instead, bring in small amounts of this brightness via furnishings and accessories if needed. Gray tones may be good for the intellect and consequently worth a study, but they may also promote depression, so are not so good for bedrooms, although these colors that imbue movement can be useful in the guest rooms to prevent overly long stays by guests and in-laws.
Skin-type colors, as a general guide, can be great for support, rest, and stillness. Some limited red-hot colors can be great for charging love! (Purple is also considered a fire red.)
SOUND
Shhhh! Quiet and ideally silence from all external noise and street noise, and distance from other sources of noise is important. Bedrooms are ideally furthest away from the street.(Consider double glazing the bedroom if it’s a problem.)
EMR TURN OFFS
Be aware of EMR (electromagnetic radiation) and where it is! Reduce it, turn devices off, or move it away or eliminate it altogether.
Consider the position or elimination of clocks, radios, clock radios, phone chargers, TVs, low voltage lights in rooms below the bedroom, or bedside lamps. Do not use lights with transformers. Low-voltage lights that have built-in wireless Internet routers are really very negative, so turn them OFF at night if possible! Wireless and cordless phones are as bad as mobile phones and should not be in the bedroom!
ANOTHER TURN OFF
Darkness is required for full melatonin production for healing one’s body for rest, to fight disease, and to prevent or fight the development of cancer. A lack of melatonin and poor sleep patterns can contribute to depression as well as low libido. Production of melatonin by the pineal gland is inhibited by light and permitted by darkness. For this reason, melatonin has been called “the hormone of darkness,” and its onset each evening is called dim-light melatonin onset. Melatonin levels at night are reduced to 50 percent by exposure to a low-level incandescent bulb for only thirty-nine minutes, and it has been shown that women with the brightest bathrooms have an increased risk for breast cancer.
Reduced melatonin production has been proposed as a likely factor in the significantly higher cancer rates in night workers, and the effect of modern lighting practices, including light pollution, on endogenous melatonin has been proposed as a contributory factor to the larger overall incidence of some cancers in the developed world.
And if that’s not enough of an incentive, ladies: melatonin helps delay ageing!
Blue spectrum light from our smartphone and device screens, TVs, and fluorescent and LED lights is a real issue and interferes with our circadian rhythms, so at a minimum use the yellow filter option on your device after dark and or use yellow tinted glasses made specifically for this. However, whilst it’s important to have darkness during sleep, ideally we also have plenty of cleansing day light entering the room during the day.
NATURAL CONCERNS
The closer to natural a material is the more likely it will be non-toxic and of a better vibration. Use natural paints, floor finishes, and natural fiber bedding and beds. Wood frames and construction of the bed are much better than metal. Avoid those beautiful looking old brass and steel bedheads.
REDUCTION OF TOXINS
Be aware of toxin creating furnishings, bedding, paints, etc. Eliminate toxins where possible, and do NOT use insecticides in the house! Buy a fly swatter, or even better, chase them outside. And even dry cleaning embeds toxins in clothes and bedspreads, etc.
BEAM ME UP, NOT!
Overhead ceiling beams that cross over the bed are to be avoided. They can create a cutting or oppressive energy, a bow wave that may create disharmony or even serious illness. At least paint them to match the ceiling, or better still, enclose them with a ceiling if possible, or even a handmade fabric canopy. Overly high and sloping ceilings should be avoided for the bedroom.
WHAT’S ON THE WALL?
Be aware of what images are on your walls. Use POSITIVE IMAGES ONLY. Pictures like The Scream, for instance, actually create negative energy. Do not have pictures of single people if you’re single and want a partner. It’s surprisingly common when I’m doing Vastu consultations in homes, to find multiple images or statues of single females in the homes of women looking for a relationship. Pictures of three people in a bedroom if you’re married may energetically invite a third party in as an affair, so you could inadvertently be inviting trouble. Picture of deities and spiritual teachers are not recommended in the bedroom.
REFLECTIONS
Mirror, mirror on the wall . . .
Mirrors in bedrooms should be minimized and ideally placed inside wardrobe doors or least not seen when in the bed. Mirrored wardrobes are not recommended. Mirrors also represent mystical aspects and can change or add onto the space.
POSITIVE ENERGY
Invite positive energy in from the east, north, and northeast. Keep the northeast sector of the bedroom as light and as open as possible. No heavy furniture and NO clutter here!
DOORWAYS
The door must open all the way, 90 degrees minimum, but the more the better. It is best not to have anything hanging on the door, or not too much, and nothing stored behind the door, certainly not if it feels like it’s cluttered!
The door from which you enter your bedroom is a symbol of the possibilities your life has to offer you, to fully allow positive opportunities to flow to you. A door that cannot open fully will limit this support that makes your life more complete and flowing. Allow the energy in uninterrupted.
Again, have nothing (undeliberate) behind the door – and no clutter! Consider the direction of the swing of the door relative to the room to provide a good and easy flow of energy.
We spend almost a third of our life in bed asleep. Watch the position of your body relative to the bed. Your feet should not directly face the opening of the door. In Chinese feng shui it’s known as as the coffin position. In some European and British traditions one that has passed is carried out the door feet first, or even through an opening made in the wall so the spirit does not return.
Keep the bed away from windows as much as possible, and it is best not to be under or right next to windows. However, do allow cross-ventilation if possible. Two open windows across the face is most comfortable
Remember that there are many things that we need to keep in mind when you are arranging your home, especially your bedroom. Buying furniture is not something that you do every once in a while, so it’s important to do it right from the beginning.
