Feng Shui Your Kitchen for Health, Prosperity, and Happiness
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that can be used to create a harmonious and balanced environment. The kitchen is an important area in the home to focus on when practicing feng shui, as it is the place where we nourish ourselves and our loved ones.
Here are some simple feng shui tips for creating a kitchen that promotes health, prosperity, and happiness:
- Make sure the kitchen is well-ventilated and well-lit. Good ventilation and Bright Light in Feng Shuilighting are essential for a healthy kitchen. Make sure there is plenty of natural light coming into the kitchen, and consider installing an exhaust fan to help remove cooking odors and steam.
- Maximize your range. An oven is considered a wealth item, especially one that has more range burners, because wealthy people could afford them. Add a mirror behind your range or place a reflective tea kettle in the middle of the range to make it appear like you have even more burners.
- Don’t align oven & sink. Your oven is seriously the most important appliance in your kitchen, according to feng shui. If your oven/range and sink are directly across from each other it has the effect of all of your wealth flowing down the drain. Offset them to maximize your prosperity.
- Choose the right colors for your kitchen. The colors you choose for your kitchen can have a big impact on the overall energy of the space. Soft, calming colors such as green, blue, and purple promote a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, while bold, vibrant colors like red and yellow can bring energy and excitement to the kitchen. Be sure to align those colors with the bagua map.
- Keep the kitchen clean and clutter-free. Organization is so important! Clutter can block the flow of positive energy in the kitchen, so it’s important to keep the space clean and organized. Regularly wipe down surfaces, sweep and mop the floor, and get rid of any unnecessary items. Especially keep your oven and range area spotless.
- Bonus: Choose the right location. This is really only practical if you’re still in the home planning process. The ideal location for a kitchen is not aligned or within sight of the front door. This ensures that the energy of the kitchen doesn’t flow out of the house, but rather stays contained within the space. Even if the kitchen is already in place, use furniture, crystals, or other tools to redirect qi energy properly.
By following these feng shui principles, you can create a kitchen that promotes health, prosperity, and happiness. Whether you’re a seasoned feng shui practitioner or new to the practice, these tips can help you create a positive and harmonious energy in your kitchen.
However, there is so much more to an integrative approach of making the perfect kitchen design for feng shui to harness qi energy, including directional alignment, the five elements, layout, the placement of other appliances, plants, etc.

The Importance of House Numbers in Feng Shui
In feng shui, the numbers in your home address (like 12345 Main St) can greatly impact on the energy of your space and well-being. By choosing the right house and/or apartment address number, you can enhance the energy of your home to bring about positive change in your life.
Calculations
First, let’s understand the two different ways feng shui views and calculates address numbers:
- The simplest method is to simply look at the numbers of the address individually. This is often used with repeated numbers like 444 or 888.
- The calculation most commonly used for multi-digit, random-looking numbers is to keep adding up the digits until you end up with a single-digit number. For example, with 12345 Main St, you would first add up the individual digits as 1+2+3+4+5 = 15. Because the result is not yet a single-digit number, you would add up the resulting digits as 1+5 = 6. Your resulting number of 6 is the home’s feng shui number.
Meanings
Different numbers have different meanings and associations. It’s important to have an address number that aligns with your goals. Here are some of the most common number meanings in feng shui:
- Unity, independence, and new beginnings
- Balance, harmony, and partnership
- Creativity, growth, and expansion
- Stability, security, and grounding (but, keep reading below)
- Change, adaptability, and adventure
- Love, family, and domestic harmony
- Spirituality, introspection, and inner wisdom
- Wealth, prosperity, and abundance
- Completion, fulfillment, and attainment
In particular, feng shui considers certain numbers to be lucky or unlucky in feng shui. For example, Chinese culture considers the number 8 to be lucky. Some claim that 8 resembles the infinite symbol (∞) turned sideways. Therefore, people associate it with financial prosperity. Similarly, people sometimes consider the number 9 to be lucky, as it is associated with fulfillment. Some people will only choose a 9 address upon retirement, however.
On the other hand, feng shui considers the number 4 to be an unlucky number. That’s because it is associated with death and bad luck. In many Asian cultures, buildings and floors that contain the number 4 are often skipped or avoided altogether. Many western buildings like hotels do the same with the 13th floor.
Cures
When I work with home builders, we can pre-select good address numbers. But, how about when you are already living in a home that doesn’t add up to an auspicious number?
One cure I provide during home consultations is to write an additional number, but have it hidden in some way. For instance, suppose your address was 229 Broadway (2+3+9=14 and 1+4=5), which adds up to 5.
If you wanted to change this to an 8, you would need to add 3. One option is to draw a 3 in the same colored paint as your wall right next to the existing 229. Alternatively, draw a 3 just next to your numbers and cover it with a wall tile. Either way, the extra number you added would be invisible to anyone just looking at your home.
Next Steps
When it comes to applying feng shui principles to your address, paying attention to numbers can be a helpful way to create a more harmonious and balanced environment. By using numbers that have positive associations and avoiding those that have negative associations, you can help to enhance the flow of energy in your space and promote greater well-being and success. But house numbers are only a small part of feng shui.

5 Feng Shui Tips for RVs
I actually travel in an RV quite often. Other RVers frequently ask me if feng shui also applies to RVs. The short answer is YES! Here is my more thorough answer with some tips…
I love RVing because it provides my family with a unique opportunity to travel and explore new places while I consult with my clients. There’s nothing quite like having a beautifully energizing landscape just outside of our home on wheels. It’s also important to create a peaceful and harmonious environment inside your recreational vehicle, whether it is a motorhome, fifth wheel, travel trailer, camper van or truck camper. That’s where feng shui comes in. The design and layout of your RV has a significant impact on the overall energy of your living space on the go.
Here are five tips for applying basic feng shui principles to your RV:
- Follow the bagua. Overlay the bagua just as you would with the floorplan of a home, with the Career Area aligned with the main entry door of the RV. I think it is even easier with RVs to do this because you can usually download a floorplan from the manufacturer and they are almost exclusively rectangular, which is an ideal feng shui shape for a living space.
- Declutter and clean up. Your spouse is probably already telling you that your clutter in the RV is making your rig overweight. Now you’re going to get it from me, as well. You NEED to declutter, not only to stay under the manufacturer’s GVWR and save on fuel, but also to have a good flow of energy. Being clutter-free will help to create a sense of openness, which is essential for good feng shui.
- Use soft lighting. Soft, warm lighting can help to create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere in your RV. Avoid harsh, bright lights and opt for dimmer switches to create a soothing ambiance. If you’re a boondocker, this provides a double-whammy by lowering your battery consumption.
- Choose calming colors. Use calm, neutral colors in your RV to create a sense of relaxation. Softer shades of blue, green, and pink are particularly soothing and can help to create a peaceful atmosphere.
- Incorporate the Five Elements. In feng shui, the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) create an additional connection to nature. Incorporating them into your RV’s interior design will give you grounding properties, which helps provide calming energy.
If you’re a full-timer, I can’t stress enough the importance of applying feng shui to not only your RV, but also your storage unit and any other properties you have, even rental properties. Please leave a comment if you want more advanced feng shui tips for RVs. I hope to see you on the road!

Too Much Feng Shui? 5 Tips to Avoid Feng Shui Overload
Feng shui is a great tool for adding harmony to your space, but is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Can you have too much feng shui?
The quick answer is yes, you can have too much feng shui, just like you can over-fertilize or over-water a plant (okay, I’m guilty of that). Believe me, I have had several first consultations with clients whose homes looked less like a well-balanced home and more like a Chinese restaurant with tons of meaningless trinkets. Let’s avoid that, shall we?
Here are five tips that I recommend to avoid feng shui overload in your space:
- Follow the 80/20 rule. In feng shui, it’s important to have a balance of yin and yang energy in your space. 80% of your space should be yin (calming, soothing, relaxing) and 20% should be yang (energizing, vibrant, stimulating).
- Don’t overdo it with the Five Elements. In feng shui, the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal & water) are an important tool for creating harmony. But don’t go overboard with them, as too much of any one element can create imbalance. Instead, try to decorate with a balance of the Five Elements in your space.
- Use feng shui to enhance your space — not change it. Instead of trying to change your space to fit the principles of feng shui, use it to enhance your space and bring harmony to it. You probably don’t need to knock down walls or literally change the direction of your home by the compass (seriously, some people do this — and they’re still miserable).
- Don’t try to implement every feng shui tip you come across. There are many different feng shui techniques out there, and I know it can be tempting to try to implement as many as possible to improve your life. Instead, choose a few key feng shui techniques that resonate with you for your space. I compare this to trying to take a trip from Los Angeles to New York. There are lots of forms of transportation to get there (planes, trains, car) and even more routes for each to take along the way. Find a good, simple plan and stick with it. Don’t make it look like you’re zig-zagging along your route!
- Trust your instincts. You need to believe that what you’re implementing in your space is right for you. If something doesn’t feel right, chances are it’s not going to work for you. Feng shui, if applied correctly, makes logical sense. If you don’t understand why you’re implementing each technique you’re using, let’s talk about it first.
While feng shui is powerful, certainly try not to over do it, especially if it doesn’t fit your style. I also have a funny video that I put out a few years ago that similarly goes through this concept.

The Power of Positive Relationships: How Friends and Family Impact Our Lives through Feng Shui
Do you feel like those around you are supportive to your well-being? Feng shui can help you attract and maintain positive relationships with your friends and family.
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice of creating harmony and balance in your surroundings, and we can use it to maximize your relationships with friends and family.
When you enter your home from the front door, there are three areas we need to look at: The Love & Relationship Corner, the Family Area, and the Helpful People Corner.
The Love & Relationships Corner is the back-right of your home. This area is believed to have an impact on your romantic and social connections. To enhance the energy in this area, be sure to place objects like throw pillows, bedside tables and towels in pairs – even if you are currently single. Try to use symbols that represent love to you in order to attract positive energy and good relationships.
The Family Area is the left side of your home. This area represents the support and guidance that you receive from your loved ones. To enhance the energy in this area, be sure to add your family photos and family trees (except on top of a fireplace). Whatever you add here should promote a sense of togetherness and support in your home.
The Helpful People Corner is the front-right of your home. This area represents the energy that attracts and nourishes new friends and work associates. Add objects and pictures that remind you of the types of people you want to attract into your life.
Focus your energy on attracting and cultivating people around you that help you feel good about your life. I’ve recommended in a previous blog post that you occasionally declutter your friends. Unfriend and block, if you will, the contacts in your life that emotionally and physically drain you.
Friends and family play a vital role in your life. They’re important to your emotional well-being. Incorporate feng shui principles into your home so you can attract positive energy in your relationships. Remember that a strong support system is key to living a happy and fulfilled life.

Good Fortune Boost: Feng Shui Guide
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice of creating harmony and balance in your surroundings. You can also use Feng Shui to attract good luck and prosperity. I tell my clients that a goal of Feng Shui is to increase their “surface area” for luck. That is, they can purposefully create more possibilities for positive opportunities to flow into their lives.
I really like that phrase: “increase your surface area for luck.” It reminds me that not everything is dependent upon hard work – but we also can’t leave everything up to chance. Instead, we need to apply effort towards the areas in our lives that will most increase our chances for luck.
Clear the Clutter
The best way to increase your surface area for luck is by keeping your environment clean and clutter-free. Clutter blocks the flow of lucky energy in your home. By contrast, when you keep your home organized, you feel organized and accomplished. You’re also creating more space for positive energy to flow in.
Have you ever been invited into someone’s car or home that was incredibly cluttered? At first glance, would you trust them with an important area of your life, like being your bookkeeper or managing your business? If you have clutter all around you, take a moment to think about how it impacts the perception that others might have of you. Is your clutter potentially preventing you from getting opportunities for good fortune?
Add Lucky Symbols
Another way to increase your surface area for luck is by adding symbols of good fortune to your home. For example, you can place a money tree in your home, which some interpret as a symbol of abundance. Such symbols act as a reminder of your goals so you can attract positive energy to your home.
Frankly, regardless the symbol, it needs to be something that YOU subconsciously believe is a sign of good fortune that will encourage you to take additional small steps every day to achieve your goals. I personally love and highly recommend vision boards for this reason.
Open the Door to Good Luck
In Feng Shui, the front door is the “mouth of chi.” It’s truly the main entrance for positive energy to enter your home. Keep your front door clean and well-maintained (good fit, no squeaks, etc.) to create a positive first impression, which invites in good luck. Placing a wind chime here might enhance the flow of positive energy, but it will certainly also remind you of your goals each time you hear it chime in the wind.
What’s the Color for Luck?
Choosing the right colors for the appropriate areas of your home can also increase your surface area for luck. Different colors are associated with different meanings and energies in Feng Shui and psychology. For example, red is associated with good luck and good reputation, while blue is associated with tranquility and peace. When you add these colors to your home decor, you can attract positive energy to enhance the flow of luck. Be sure to follow the Feng Shui bagua to learn about proper placement of these colors.
Next Steps
Increasing your surface area for luck is an important aspect of Feng Shui. By keeping your environment clutter-free, adding symbols of good fortune, keeping a positive first impression with your front door, and using the right colors, you can attract good luck in your life. Remember, the key to success in Feng Shui is to create balance and harmony in your surroundings.
