How Can Feng Shui Make a Hotel Great?

Hotels & resorts, much like restaurants, are most successful when they have a positive energy upon entering.  Here are a few tips to ensure your guests keep coming back:

• The entrance should be harmonious and balanced, which makes people feel safe and welcome.
• The reception desk should not be located under a beam or in an area where the ceiling lowers.
• Bathrooms should be as far as possible from the front entrance.
• Keep each floor level, without rising and falling.
• Staircases cannot be avoided, but it is best to have them turn clockwise rather than counter-clockwise.
• Water features, such as fountains and pools, are best in front of the resort when possible.
• Toilets should be hidden out of view from each room.  If possible, it should be separated from the sink by its own door.
• As with anyplace in Feng Shui, keep the hotel clean and organized.  Keep dumpsters hidden and trash cans shiny and bright.

I am a certified Feng Shui consultant and experienced real estate investor. Through my firm, Ms. Feng Shui, I provide personalized, professional, in-person and virtual Feng Shui consultations and seminars. Feng Shui Certification of Property
Dependent upon the degree of Feng Shui implementation based upon my consultations, I can provide an official Feng Shui certification of the hotel or resort.  This certification will highlight the various aspects of the property and rooms that will provide harmony and balance through Feng Shui.

Pre-Build Phase

Site Acquisition Consulting
Some hotel developers involve me as early as the site acquisition process to ensure that the land they look to acquire has positive Feng Shui. I look at the energy flow of a property and particularly focus on its energy flow in the streets, rivers, electrical lines, etc.  I also look at the prior use of the land and the use of the surrounding lots. Though I can virtually always provide cures and remedies in the Feng Shui of bad properties, I will recommend against purchasing a property if it is in the developer’s and hotelier’s best interest. return to top

Naming and Numbering Review
Some names and numbers can have a particularly negative or positive connotation to those familiar with Feng Shui and certain Asian languages. Numbers, in particular, could mean anything from “death” to “infinite prosperity.” Naming is an excellent way to compensate for unavoidable Feng Shui problems in site designs and room designs. To make sure that particular names and numbers used in the project provide for positive Feng Shui for the developer, hotelier and guests, I can remotely review hotel names, ballroom names, conference room names and room numbers. return to top

Architect Training
In order to provide a more efficient solution for the developer, I can provide training for architects and landscape architects. This will minimize the amount of time required in the later design stages in modification of designs without Feng Shui in mind. return to top

Site Design Review
The layout of buildings along streets and the use of open space is quite important to Feng Shui. Often-referenced concerns include corner lots and T-intersections. To make sure that the overall hotel or resort designs provide for positive Feng Shui for the developer and future guests, I can provide on-site and remote consultation services to site planners to discuss Feng Shui and its application in building arrangement, open space, hardscaping, streetscaping, etc. I can also provide alternative design suggestions and/or remedies for hazardous elements and can review final site designs. return to top

Guestroom Design Review
Guestroom designs that are auspicious for Feng Shui can be quite complex to achieve. Commonly-known designs that are hazardous include door alignment and toilets in view. To ensure that the individual room designs and layouts offer positive Feng Shui, I can provide on-site and remote consultation services to architects and planners on individual designs, ensuring that Feng Shui guidelines are met while also being considerate of traffic flow, orientation, height, volume, etc. I can also provide alternative design suggestions and/or remedies for hazardous elements and can review final room designs and layouts. return to top

Lobby Design Review
The Feng Shui of a lobby can make-or-break a hotel and define it as so much more than just lodging. The original MGM Grand design in Las Vegas featured a lion’s mouth as an entrance – something few Asians would walk through. A lobby should be grand while also comforting and calming.  Nothing can achieve harmony and balance like Feng Shui.  To ensure that the layouts of the lobby and other common areas offer positive Feng Shui, I can provide on-site and remote consultation services to architects and planners, ensuring that Feng Shui guidelines are met while also being considerate of traffic flow, orientation, height, volume, etc. I can also provide alternative design suggestions and/or remedies for hazardous elements and can review final designs and layouts. return to top

Restaurant Design Review
Restaurants offer a key revenue-generating opportunity for hoteliers and have a Feng Shui all their own.  Every restaurant is quite unique and the Feng Shui of its placement within the resort and its interior layout are delicate to achieve. Landscaping Design Review
Landscaping is an overlooked area to Feng Shui in many hotels & resorts. The use of Feng Shui principles can ensure proper flow of energy through the property, but it is also useful to remedy and compensate for unavoidable hazardous elements in the site plan. To make sure that Feng Shui standards are met in general landscaping of the community, I can provide on-site and remote consultation services to landscape architects on general landscaping design to include hardscaping and softscaping, review final landscaping designs, and can perform site visits to make sure implementation is followed. return to top

Depending on prior use of a property, lingering energy could be quite negative. A Feng Shui site blessing will clear out potentially negative energy. This is beneficial not only for the hotelier and would-be guests, but also to streamline construction. Post-Build Phase

Interior Design Review
Once the hotel has been built, it is time to enhance Feng Shui through interior design. To ensure that the property’s Feng Shui is enhanced through its decor, I will provide on-site and remote consultation services in combination with the hotelier’s interior designers on interior paint colors, furnishings, artwork, plants, etc.  The ultimate goal is to ensure harmony and balance while not impeding traffic flow, orientation, height, and volume. return to top

Opening Blessing / Space Clearing
Much can happen during the build phase of a project. A Feng Shui site blessing can clear out potentially negative energy that lingers prior to opening. This is beneficial not only for would-be guests, but also to the hotelier. The blessing ceremony is another great opportunity to generate positive media attention, particularly to attract Feng Shui-conscious guests, which is an ever-expanding community. return to top
