Types of Feng Shui
By Jessie Kim
There are several different schools, or sects, of Feng Shui. I won’t go into heavy detail, but here is a list of some of these schools:
1. Traditional or Classical Schools
- Form or Landscape School of Feng Shui
- Compass School of Feng Shui
- Flying Star School of Feng Shui (Xuan Kong)
- Eight Mansions School of Feng Shui (Ba Zhi)
2. Intuitive or Modern School of Feng Shui
- Western School of Feng Shui
- Pyramid School of Feng Shui
3. Black Sect Tantric Buddhist School (BTB Feng Shui or Black Sect School of Feng Shui), often called “Bagua Feng Shui”
Some of these schools date back thousands of years while others are more recently modified versions of older schools.
I have studied nearly all of the schools and have found that virtually all of them can help you achieve what you desire from life.
I think the school that you choose is not much different than choosing which roads to take as you commute to work. Depending on traffic, speed limits and distance, some will get you there faster and more safely than others. I personally choose to take the path of least resistance.
One of the major differences between many of these schools of thought is whether or not to use compass directions (north, south, east and west) when determining home location, home layout, etc.
In my studies, I have found that working with a compass proves to be counter to modern living. For example, in some years, an eastward facing home is ideal, while it is the worst possible direction in others.
Moreover, much of the ideal compass directions are determined by an individual person’s Gua or Kua Number. What if a husband and wife have differing numbers and therefore different ideal directions for their home?
None of my clients, be they home builders or individuals, have the ability to cater to an annual change in direction of a home’s front door.
Therefore, the school of Feng Shui that I practice is the Black Hat or Black Sect School of Feng Shui.
Instead of working with an ever-changing compass direction, the Black Sect School of Feng Shui works with a Bagua or energy map of the home. It focuses on the energy that you can control.
Black Sect, or Bagua Feng Shui is a comprehensive but easy-to-follow school that is not ever-changing. While you still need to re-energize your surroundings regularly, you are not required to change the direction of your home every year or make other impractical or costly commitments.
