Stairway to Failure: Use Feng Shui to Fix Front Doors that Open to Stairs
This is a common issue I see in many homes.
Forces at Work
Front doors should never immediately open to a stairway. It’s a common reason for financial failure. I always advise my home builder clients against them and my homeowner clients to remedy them.
Here is the problem as it relates to Feng Shui: the gravity force of Qi (pronounced “chi”) energy coming down the stairs is greater than the incoming Qi from the door.
This symbolizes the loss of income and wealth, but also impacts all aspects of Feng Shui. Whether you are the home builder or the homeowner, this is bad news.
Remember that the front door is always the Career & Life Path area of your home.
Feng Shui Cures
Now, I have solutions for home builders when I work with their designers.
But, what if you already own a home with such stairways or are seriously considering buying such a property where this is the only flaw? Certainly remodeling to move the stairs isn’t practical.
The cure is to hang a crystal or a wind chime from the ceiling halfway between the base of the stairs and the front door. The effect of this is to diffuse and spread the Qi as it comes down the stairs. You need to prevent it from rushing out the front door with the incoming energy along with it.
By the way, if there’s more than about twelve feet of distance between the door and stairs, the issue isn’t as severe. It doesn’t hurt to still remedy it, though.

We are in the process of purchasing a condo where the stairs leads to the house.
It’s an upstairs unit, so our front door leads into the stairs of our home.
HELP ME
Greetings, Christy! We definitely need to get some positive energy up those stairs to the condo you are purchasing. If those stairs are exclusive to your unit and you are allowed, my recommendation is to have some pictures of your family and/or places you want to travel along the wall of the stairs. That should hopefully attract some positive energy your way.
Also, if you fall out of escrow for whatever reason, I just published the following blog post with a good Feng Shui homebuying checklist that you can use to target another property that doesn’t have such an issue:

Is it good or bad to sleep with head to the stairs?
Hi, Jim! It’s not good to sleep with your head to the stairs. All the energy is rushing down onto your head or it’s rushing down away from you when you sleep.
My wife is concerned about our spiral staircase facing the front door. We have a 20′ ceiling so a crystal or chimes are not good solution. It is 25′ from the doors which are heavy iron. A picture is worth a thousand words so maybe it isnt as bad as she thinks. She would like to place a wall at the doors to block but maybe that is yoo much and would ruin the esthetics of the entry.
How do we send you a picture so you can see ehat we are concerned about?
Thank you for reaching out, Richard! Feel free to contact me so we can get into more details about your situation. This sounds like a very special case.
Our front door and staircase is lined up and about 3 or 4 feet apart. What to do?? New home ….
If you’re going to stay in the home with the front door and staircase aligned, then start by following the cures in this article that you commented on – use a wind chime or crystal to break up the energy flow.
My door opens to stairs to go up to the bedrooms the roof is the up high the next level does it matter how low the wind chimes are
Can I hand a pot plant fake one
Hi, Jay! A crystal or maybe a wind chime between the door and stairs would be best. You can hang it as low as you want, as long as none of the household members hit their heads on it. I would avoid a plant there, even if it is fake. Good luck!
Does the size of the wind chime matter? I have sweet tiny wind chime with a crystal hanging from the bottom.
Hi, Wendy! Please don’t take this the wrong way but when it comes to wind chimes as they pertain to your home or office… size does matter! I suggest a six-rod windchime, the smallest chime being at least six inches in height. If you’re looking for something inside – hanging just between your door and stairs, a simple crystal ball will do the trick. Good luck!
Hi there. We live in an apartment complex on the 2nd level. The stairs to come up or down are directly in front of our front door and many people use them to get to their units as well. Should we hang a small mirror outside our door?
Hi, Cece! That must feel like an overwhelming situation. Until you can get yourself into someplace new, there are a couple of remedies you can use. First, as you said, you can hang a convex bagua mirror above your door facing towards the stairs. Second, I suggest a red door mat outside your doorway. Be sure to reach out for a consultation when you’re looking for a new home. Good luck!
Thank you so much!! Same effect if it’s not above but on the screen door?
Hi, Cece! Happy to help! Yes, if you’re okay with it hanging on the door, that should be fine. Just make sure it doesn’t fall off.
Hello,
We have a condo, our unit is on 2nd floor. The stairs are L-shaped and very close to the front door. The distance between the door and stairs is less than double the height of the tallest person in the home. From the foyer, there are 9 steps upstair, then turn right to a few more steps before we reach the 2nd floor. Please help how do we fix this issue? Thank you very much.
Hello, Diane! Do you happen to have room for doormat or the ability to hang a crystal between the door and staircase to slow the energy? If your condo association doesn’t allow it, reach out to me for a consultation.
Hello Ms. Kim,
Thank you so much for your prompt answer. Actually, the staircase is inside the house. When you open the front door, you can see the staircase immediately. There is no living area on the first floor. Only the front door, the staircase, and the garage door, which is on the right side of the staircase.
I think I do have room for a doormat. Is there any specific color that I need to get?. Yes, I can hang a crystal between the door and the staircase.
Thank you again for your help.
Hi, Diane! Thank you for the additional context. I usually only get into details like this with paying clients but here we go… For the doormat, I recommend something with the color red. Additionally, make sure that the staircase is well lit and you have some family pictures or exciting artwork along that wall to draw the attention up the stairs. Take care!
Hello Ms. Kim, I just want to ask what should I do because we will renting an apartment and there’s a second floor and when I count the steps it’s 15 steps. Please help me Ms. Kim. Thank you
Hi Rubylyne! I understand that you are renting an apartment where you open the front door to a staircase that has 15 steps. While there might be an issue where the front door opens immediately to stairs, I don’t think there is any added concern about it being 15 steps, in particular. For the stairs, be sure to follow the cures in this blog post and reach out if you are looking for a more thorough review of your apartment. Good luck!
Hi Ms. Kim, my daughter’s and I are looking to rent a house. We have seen a few but the conditions were not very pleasing…for example, house smelled like cat urine & smoke, or house was too small…we even saw a house with carpet in the bathrooms??!!! We finally found one that was just perfect, BUT…when you open the front door, the staircase leads directly upstairs. There is not enough room to put a small table in the entry way. Should we keep looking? What would you suggest?
Hi, Kristin! So sorry for the delay, but I’ve been traveling. For the truly perfect home for you and your daughters, I suggest you keep looking if you have the time. I did mention a couple of tips to mitigate the issues you’ll have by using a crystal or a wind chime, but it would be best for your financial future to find a house without the front door opening to stairs. You don’t want your finances draining away! Good luck to you and your daughters, Kristin!
